SERVICES ASSOCIATED TO DIGITALISED CONTENTS OF TISSUES IN BIOBANKS ACROSS EUROPE 1 Dr. Roberto Bilbao 12 th September 2012, Bilbao

Table Of Contents The idea History of the proposal Background Objectives Innovations Project Overview The Biopool Project Consortium 2

3 Tumor surgically removed Lung tumor processed to histological slide Lung with tumor Multiscale high resolution digital scanning of tissues Other biobanks Services Other biobanks Diagnosis Education Research Interconnection Data Agregation Search and indexing Central server Histological images Clinical data MOTIVATION: the need of biobanks of sharing, exchanging, processing, understanding and exploiting the digital histology images and the data associated to the biologic material stored in these institutions The idea

History of the proposal – BIOEF is interested in the development of a tool for histologic image analysis – TECNALIA and EMEDICA are initially contacted – It is thought that opening the tool to further biobanks on a distributed environment of sources will add a plus to the tool – European calls are identified and new partners contacted (UBRUN and PERTIMM) – First stage is approved and improved with the inclusion of further partners (EMC and CULTEK) – The project is presented and invited to negotiations. – 1 September 2012 starting day – 12 September 2012 kick-off meeting 4

Objectives The main objective is to build and to provide access to a linked pool of digital data of histological digital images and data associated to them, providing a great basis for cooperation in diagnosis, education and medical research, by means of: – Providing means for the interconnection of different biobank digital resources – Building an integrated pool, harmonizing the data provided by different sources and facilitating data aggregation – Developing added value services and tools for the management and exploitation of these data 5

Results The outputs of the project will be: – A decentralised image and data storage – A software platform allowing to search the BIOPOOL system based on text or/and image, as well as providing tools to procure, visualize and analyse images. – An API to enable the development of new services for final costumers. – New business oportunities based on the data present in BIOPOOL. 6

Innovations To interconnec different and heterogeneous histological image data pools, and the association of this images with contextual data. To develop a Content Based Image Retrieval System supporting search based on text and/or image. 7
