About Rosies… Copyright Rosies Youth Mission Inc All rights reserved.

Rosies provides unconditional acceptance and friendship to people who are marginalised within our community especially those who are homeless, at risk of homelessness, or simply lonely.

We reach out to all of our friends on the street, in the courts, detention centres, prisons, and drop- in centres.  Rosies is a volunteer-based not for profit organisation  Through the joy of friendship we aim to acknowledge human dignity and inspire an increased self-reliance  We engage youth, and the community, through education, awareness, and volunteer programs.  Rosies is non-preaching and non-discriminatory. Rosies is a Catholic Charity of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI) formed by the love of Jesus Christ.  The OMI are a missionary order of priests and brothers founded by St Eugene de Mazenod in 1826  St Eugene grew up in exile during the French Revolution, preferring to work with society’s most abandoned – the poor, homeless, or in prison – particularly young people  Today, St Eugene’s founding principles underpin our OMI and Rosies aspirations. Rosies was established in Victoria in  Fr Tom Shortall OMI founded cafe/drop in centre for young people in a town, Rosebud (ran 10yrs)  ‘Rosies Oblate Youth Mission’ was established in our sister organisation still operates a Flinders Street Station van (Wed/Fri)  OMI and Volunteers headed to the Gold Coast to support youth at risk during the summer holidays. ‘Rosies Youth Mission Inc’ was formerly established in Queensland in  Longest serving community organisation supporting ‘Gold Coast Schoolies Week’ safety response program  Ran a full time outreach ( ) with volunteers living in the community for a year  Started taking a van, with hot drinks and friendly conversation, to the streets meeting local homeless.

Rosies has 23 outreaches operating in nine branches  Brisbane  Caboolture  Cairns  Gold Coast  Ipswich  Logan/Beenleigh  Mareeba/Atherton  Sunshine Coast  Toowoomba  Wynnum (coming soon). Copyright Rosies Youth Mission Inc All rights reserved.

Our honoured Patrons support Rosies and our friends, both privately and publicly…  Sir Peter Cosgrove AC MC “At a time when our attention is understandably occupied with very grave international events let us never forget there are many young people on the streets experiencing isolation and discrimination. Through Rosies let us do everything we can to help them.”  Leneen Forde AC “That young people who are homeless know they will always be welcomed and accepted at Rosies provides a very important sense of belonging.” Copyright Rosies Youth Mission Inc All rights reserved.

As true friends, our volunteers are committed to Be there irrespective of weather Socialise with our friends without prejudice Provide a cuppa and bite to eat Provide other basic support needs Connect with services or support agencies. Copyright Rosies Youth Mission Inc All rights reserved.

About an Outreach… Copyright Rosies Youth Mission Inc All rights reserved.

Rosies operates 23 outreaches and programs to support our many friends  Street (vans, BBQs, & Drop in Centre) - offering a cuppa, a bite to eat, supplies, and a chat  Court Support, Detention Centre & Prison Visit – offering a friendly presence and a sense of connection  Youth & Student Engagement – various engagement programs and Schoolies Week safety response. Copyright Rosies Youth Mission Inc All rights reserved.

Rosies operates on a socially inclusive basis  We offer all our friends experiences of community and belonging – unconditionally  Even when material support (supplies, blankets etc) is offered, social inclusion is at the core “A socially inclusive society is defined as one where all people feel valued, their differences are respected, and their basic needs are met so they can live in dignity. Social exclusion is the process of being shut out from the social, economic, political and cultural systems which contribute to the integration of a person into the community.” (Msgr David Cappo, 2002).  Rosies’ outreach teams have a minimum number  Street vans – 4 volunteers  Detention Centre & Prison Visits – 2 volunteers  Court – 3 volunteers  Student Engagement Program – 3 students + 1 teacher  Each outreach team has a ‘Team Leader’  Usually also a ‘Deputy’ Team Leader  All team members report to Team Leaders  All outreaches consist of three compulsory parts. Copyright Rosies Youth Mission Inc All rights reserved.

Outreaches operate to suit needs  Drop In Centre – volunteers serve $2 light meals at set times and provide food hampers for small cost  Prison Visits - volunteers are escorted to spend time with our friends at set times  Courts - volunteers serve light refreshments and a bite to eat to friends at the courthouse  BBQs – volunteers bring, cook, and serve food to our friends in a designated park/caravan park. All of Rosies street van outreaches consist of three compulsory parts:  Part 1: Prebrief  Part 2: Service  Part 3: Debrief Copyright Rosies Youth Mission Inc All rights reserved.

Prebrief, held in a designated space prior to the outreach, provides an opportunity for  Team bonding  Information sharing  Safety reminders and instructions  Designating your role  A reflection  Saying the Rosies prayer. Copyright Rosies Youth Mission Inc All rights reserved.

A street outreach van is operated in a manner to maximise safety and support  Our friends are usually waiting for our arrival  Your Team Leader will define the outreach ‘area’  Volunteers (1-2) serve a cuppa (tea/coffee/chocolate/soup)  Other volunteers distribute items, mingle, and engage in conversation  Service providers may also be present (ie. Street doctors)  Volunteers are out on the street for about 2 hours. Copyright Rosies Youth Mission Inc All rights reserved.

Debrief, held back in the meeting space, allows for  Recording statistics  Information sharing  Raising any problems or issues  Providing emotional support - ongoing support can be provided to as and if needed. Copyright Rosies Youth Mission Inc All rights reserved.

O Jesus, make our hearts so human, that others may feel at home with us, so like Yours, that others may feel at home with You, so forgetful of self that we might simply become the place where You and they meet in the power of Your love and the joy of Your friendship. Amen. Copyright Rosies Youth Mission Inc All rights reserved.

It’s amazing what a cuppa, bite to eat, and a chat can do… You make the difference Find out how or donate now! Copyright Rosies Youth Mission Inc All rights reserved.
