MISSION STATEMENT "The purpose of the High Adventure Team is to coordinate and promote challenging outdoor activities in support of the goals of the Boy Scouts of America." The High Adventure Team Goals and Objectives are: Educate and train youth and adult leaders in the subjects critical to outdoor awareness and leadership. Promote high adventure and conservation activities. Provide a resource for information about camping, backpacking, and water treks. Administer an incentive awards program in support of our mission.

High Adventure Leader Trek Training (HALTT) This 37-hour course prepares unit leaders for backpacking and wilderness camping trips. Topics include trek planning, equipment, food, health and safety, orienteering, and places to go. Units planning to hike, backpack or snowcamp and earn High Adventure Awards must have a trained adult with a current card accompanying the trip. Leaders must renew HALTT card every four years by attending the One-Day HALTT Retraining Course. HALTT Session I weeknight session covers: Exposure/Protection from weather Studies of Hyperthermia and Hypothermia Discussions of HALTT, Water Trek, and Specialist training HALTT Session II Saturday covers: Prepartion, equipment, and leadership for High Adventure outings Health, Safety, and Mountain Miseries Food: planning, purchasing, packaging, and preparation Trekking: peaks to deserts, awards, and permits Trail: Finding, keeping, communications, customs, courtesies, and conservation HALTT Session III-A weekend session covers: Backpack hike Orienteering Discussions on boots, bears, packs, pack repair, stoves and trail building Particulars Fee:$ Registration only at the class. Water Trek Training This 15-hour course prepares unit leaders to operate on flat and moving water. Leaders completing Sessions I, II, and III-B receive a patch and numbered card. A trained adult with a current registration card must accompany units on all water outings for the unit to earn High Adventure Awards. All Water Trek specific classes, known collectively as "Session III-B", are held at the Fiesta Island Youth Aquatic Center on Mission Bay Water Trek Session III-B weeknight session covers: Safe Swim Defense Safety Afloat Canoeing Safety Planning a Water Trek Rules and Procedures for use on the river. Water Trek Session III-B weekend sessions cover: Equipment-PFDs Parts of the paddle and canoe Canoe Handling: basic canoeing strokes solo and tandem practice Canoe rescue RE-TRAINING: Leaders must renew their Water Trek card every four years by repeating the first two meetings of Session III-B. Specialist Training This course prepares unit leaders in areas beyond the basic HALTT training: desert backpacking, snow camping, technical rock climbing, cycle trekking, equipment making, search and rescue, orienteering skills, and more. Leaders completing all sessions receive a certificate and patch. Completion of Sessions I, II, III-A or III-B are not required to START the course. Course completion requires HALTT and Water Trek and Level 1 of Trail Building. Three years are allowed for completion. Unit Backpacking UNIT BACKPACK TRAINING for Scouts is a weekend training program designed for youth so they can learn basic backpacking and trail camping under their own adult leadership. Unit equipment and backpacks are provided by the Council. This program is especially applicable to those units with little or no experience or equipment. This weekend Backpack Training starts at 8:00 Saturday morning. Backpacks, lighweight mountain cook kits, propane fuel stoves and tube tents are issued at this time. A six-mile loop trail is backpack-hiked, ending at a trail camp in MSR. High Sierra Trek-experienced instructors from the H.A.T. provide guidance, instruction and help along the trail and in camp. Trail Building A one-day course to teach Scouts trail construction and maintenance. Eagle Scout candidates can be trained in trail construction for projects that they develop off of BSA property. Various patches/awards can be earned by doing trail work: TRAILSAVER Series Awards--Cummulative hours not used elsewhere: Silver Trail Saver Patch -- 6 hours of trail work. Forest Conservation Patch hours of trail work. Gold Trail Saver Patch hours of trail work. Trail Blazing Patch hours of trail work. Trail Saver Ribbon/medal hours of trail work. Pacific Crest Trail Hiking Award -- Backpack 15 miles on PCT and Do 4 hours of work on PCT or PCT feeder trail within 6 months of hike. Pacific Crest Trail Builder Award -- Do 6 hours of PCT trail work. Pacific Crest Trail Footprint -- For an additional 15 miles of PCT hiking & 2 hours of trail construction or maintenance work on PCT. BSA Climbing Instructor Description Two courses are offered: BSA Climbing Instructor Certification (good for 2 years upon successful completion) BSA Climbing Instructor-in-Training (same course as above with, 2-year certification) No climbing/rappelling instruction is given during the course. The course is designed for experienced climbers with a desire to become BSA Instructors. National BSA standards ("Climb on Safely") require councils, districts, merit badge counselors and units participating in climbing/rappelling activities to have qualified Instructor at the activity site beginning 1/01/01. BSA standards recognize qualified instructors from nationally recognized climbing schools, colleges, or a certified BSA climbing instructor. Experienced climbers can help keep climbing/rappelling as part of BSA activities by becoming a trained BSA instructor for your unit, district, or council.
