Science Process Skills Day 2

Today’s Objectives Achieve 80% or better on a Lab Safety Quiz Learn to use Metric Measurements Compare mass and weight Explain the use of a meniscus Compare and contrast predictions and inferences

Kids Have Dropped Over Dead Converting Metrics This is a sentence to help you learn to make metric measurements The 3 most frequently used measures in the metric system are the meter, liter, and gram We will call these the Bases of the Metric System

How Do I Measure Objects? Meters are used to measure lengths or distances Liters are used to measure volumes Grams are used to measure mass

Check Yourself What unit measures: Gasoline Trees Milk Apples Potatoes Butter Fences Apple Cider Grape Juice A Football Field Sugar A baseball Diamond

Metric Prefixes Kilo – 1000 x Hecto – 100 x Deka (deca) – 10 x Deci – 1/10 of the base Centi – 1/100 of the base Milli – 1/1000 of the base

Let’s Do A Metric Worksheet Your teacher is giving you metric conversion problems. Complete these problems in groups. The class will review the correct answers.

Metric Problems 1. 1 m = __________decimeters 2. 1dm = __________ cm =________mm 3. 1mm = ____m = ______dm=______cm 4. 2km = __________m m = _____________km m = _____________hectometers 7. 1 km = __________dekameters 8. 1 km = __________ hm 9. 1 liter = _________ ml kg = ___________cg

Reading A Graduated Cylinder Graduated cylinders can be used to measure small amounts of liquids. Draw a meniscus in your notes as the teacher draws one on the board. Understand how to READ a graduated cylinder.

Predictions A prediction is a forecast of what a future observation might be. Predicting is closely related to observing, inferring, and classifying. Prediction is based on careful observation and the inferences made about relationships between observed events.

Expanding Observation, Inference, & Prediction Information gained through the senses – Observation Why it happened – an Inference What you expect to happen – a Prediction

Identifying Variables A variable is something that can VARY or CHANGE in a situation. What are the variables in these statements? 1. The time it takes to run a kilometer depends on the amount of exercise a person gets. 2. The higher the temperature of water, the faster an egg will cook. 3. An investigation was done to see if keeping light on for different amounts of time each day affected the number of eggs chickens layed.

Manipulated and Responding Variables If a variable is deliberately changed in a situation, it is called a MANIPULATED variable. The variable that may change as a result of the manipulation is called the RESPONDING variable. Go back to your 3 previous statements and write down the manipulated and responding variable.
