Hypothesis vs. Prediction

Hypothesis Includes 2 factors and how one factor will affect the other. Must be able to set up a controlled experiment to test it (not take a survey) Is a statement, not a question Example: The more sleep a student gets the better he/she will be able to pay attention in class the next day.

IMPORTANT!! The results of an experiment cannot prove that a hypothesis is correct. The results either support or do not support the hypothesis. In science, a hypothesis is supported only after many scientists have conducted many experiments and produce consistent results. You can gain valuable information even when your results do not support the hypothesis.

Prediction An expected outcome of a future event Have to “wait and see” Example Highlands will win all their games this year.

Let’s Practice 1.This year’s 8 th grade will use more tissues than last year’s 8 th grade. 2.Expensive nail polish will chip less than cheap nail polish. 3.Duracell batteries will last longer than Energizer. 4.My brother will have milk with dinner tonight. 5.Plants grow faster when given proper sunlight and water.

More 6.Grandpa will live to age I will pass science this year. 8.Birds are guided by the spirits of dead antelopes. 9.Be tested? If the polar ice caps begin to melt, the amount of salt in ocean water will change. 10.Be tested? The higher you hang a bird feeder, the more birds that will come to it.
