Adding Fractions - N. Perez Adding Fractions Positive Fractions

Adding Fractions - N. Perez Introduction –A fraction is a ratio that compares two numbers (a/b). –The first number, a, is called a numerator. –The second number, b, is called a denominator.

Adding Fractions - N. Perez Process To add fractions, first you must find a common denominator. Second, you must convert your fractions to equivalent fractions with a common denominator. Third, add the numerators of your equivalent fractions, keeping the common denominator. Simplify if necessary.

Adding Fractions - N. Perez Example # 1 Add 4/6 + 3/4 Find a common denominator: 24 Equivalent Fractions: 16/ /24 Add Numerators: = 34 New Fraction: 34/24 Simplify: 1 5/12

Adding Fractions - N. Perez Example # 2 Add 1/2 + 3/4 Find a common denominator: 8 Equivalent Fractions: 4/8 + 6/8 Add Numerators: = 10 New Fraction: 10/8 Simplify: 1 1/4

Adding Fractions - N. Perez Example # 3 Add 1/2 + 1/3 Find a common denominator: 6 Equivalent Fractions: 3/6 + 2/6 Add Numerators: = 5 New Fraction: 5/6 Simplify: 5/6

Adding Fractions - N. Perez Conclusion You cannot add fractions unless you have obtained a common denominator, and changed the fractions to equivalent fractions with a common denominator.
