Unit 1: Fraction Review Use this PowerPoint to practice the skills you will be tested on!
Find Equivalent Fractions There are two rules for finding equivalent fractions. Rule 1: Multiply the numerator and the denominator by the same number. Rule 2: Divide the numerator and the denominator by the same number. Examples: 2 3 x 3 3 = = This works because we are multiplying 2/3 by “1 whole”. Anything x 1 equals itself (even though the fraction looks different!) This works because we are dividing 6/8 by “1 whole”. Anything divided by 1 equals itself (even though the fraction looks different!)

Changing Mixed Numbers into fractions… Step 1: Ask, “How many pieces are in each whole?” Step 2: Count your total number of pieces. Step 3: Write total number of pieces in the numerator. Step 4: Keep the denominator the same. Example: How many eighths do I have altogether? = 27 8

Changing Improper Fractions to Mixed Numbers… Step 1: Find out how many wholes you can make. Step 2: Write the whole number. Step 3: Find how many pieces are left over. Step 4: Write the left over pieces as a fraction, the denominator stays the same. Example: Whole 1 fifth+++ 3 = 1 5

Adding fractions with fraction sticks… Step 1: Color the fraction stick for the first fraction (do not just color the numerator amount! Think about what the whole is.) Step 2: Color the fraction stick for the second fraction. Step 3: Write the new fraction. Example: = 6 8 or 3 4
