Place Value Through Millions EnVision Math Topic 1: Lesson 1-2, Day 1 Place Value Through Millions 2011-12 *This lesson is meant to fill two class periods. You will probably only finish up to about slide 25. Materials needed: -crayons or colored pencils for each student -foldable from Lesson 1-1 for each student -dry erase board, marker, and eraser for each student

Rocket Math Today is Fact Friday, which means we will do our first set of two minute timings to see how well you know your addition and subtraction facts. (do both 2-minute timings)

How do I use place value to read and write large numbers? Today, we’ll continue investigating how to use place value to read and write large numbers.

7 9 3 5 1 2 4 8 6 , Using Place Value Thousands Period Ones Period We used our foldable to learn about the first six places in a number. Today we will add on three more places. Find your foldable and your crayons. Take out a green crayon. So far, we have the ones, tens, and hundreds place, they make up the ones period. Then we have the thousands, ten thousands, and hundred thousands place. They make up the thousands period. Now let’s add three more digits. In this next place, we’ll write *. Then *. Then *. Before we open our flaps, I would like you to make a light line with your pencil at the bottom of each flap. * Open that first flap, where we wrote a 4. 7 9 3 5 1 2 4 8 6 , Thousands Period Ones Period Using Place Value

7 9 3 5 1 2 4 8 6 , millions 4,000,000 Using Place Value On the top, we’ll write the name of the place. Does anyone know the name of this place? * On the bottom, we’ll write the value of the digit in this place. We wrote an 4. What would be the value of a 4 in this place? * Remember a millions piece is equal to ten hundred thousands. It would be a giant cube. Close that flap and open up the next flap, where we wrote a 9. 4 8 6 , 4,000,000 Thousands Period Ones Period Using Place Value

7 9 3 5 1 2 4 8 6 , 90,000,000 ten millions Using Place Value On the top, we’ll write the name of the place. Does anyone know the name of this place? * On the bottom, we’ll write the value of the digit in this place. We wrote a 9. What would be the value of a 9 in this place? * Remember a ten millions piece is equal to ten millions. It would be a giant rod. Close that flap and open up the last flap, where we wrote a 7. 3 5 1 2 4 8 6 , 90,000,000 Thousands Period Ones Period Using Place Value

7 9 3 5 1 2 4 8 6 , hundred millions 700,000,000 Using Place Value On the top, we’ll write the name of the place. Does anyone know the name of this place? * On the bottom, we’ll write the value of the digit in this place. We wrote a 7. What would be the value of a 7in this place? * Remember a hundred millions piece is equal to ten ten millions. It would be a giant flat. Close that flap. 3 5 1 2 4 8 6 , 700,000,000 Thousands Period Ones Period Using Place Value

7 9 4 3 5 1 2 , 8 6 , Using Place Value Millions Period Now our number has 9 digits, which means we have a third period. What is the name of this period? Let’s label this period on our foldable. * What do we need to do to separate the millions period from the thousands period? (add a comma) Add a comma * behind your 4 to separate your thousands period from your ones period. 7 9 4 3 5 1 2 , 8 6 , Millions Period Thousands Period Ones Period Using Place Value

392,461,805 standard form Take a look at this number. What digit is in the ten millions place? What place is the 4 in? What is the value of the 2? What digit is in the ten thousands place?
