Work Effort in the LHC Injector Complex for the Upgrade Scenarios B. Mikulec Thanks to all the valuable input from the LIU project leaders and LIU work- package holders + precious planning help from D. Hay, S. Mataguez and D. Mcfarlane B. Mikulec

Summary L4 Connection to PSB Activities  Duration for the Linac4 connection to the PSB would amount to 10 months  Deliverable (to PS): LHC production beam  Other physics beams to follow at an estimated rate of ~2/week  First beam to the PS after 8.5 months  too long for intermediate shutdown  Ion runs and CMS pixel detector installation in parallel?  Pb ion run of 1 month at end of 2016; stop ~10 days before Christmas  CMS pixel detector installation Jan – mid-May 2017 (4.5 months)  Pb ion run of 3.5 months (mid-May until end Aug 2017) End Nov – Beg. JanRadiation cool-down1.5 months Beg. Jan – End AprInstallation4 months Beg. Jan – End MayCabling campaign (3 shifts/day)5 months End May – End JunKicker HV testing + general HW testing + cold check-out1 month End Jun – End SepCommissioning with beam (produce LHC production beam)2.5 months Mid AugFirst beam to PS End AugFirst proton beam to LHC

Main PSB LS2 Activities Renovation of PSB injection line, new vertical beam distribution system at injection, complex new injection section with charge-exchange stripping foil, related beam instrumentation, injection and painting chicanes, internal dumps, new vacuum sectorisation etc. (see planning for Linac4 connection to PSB) New MPS Renovation of cooling and ventilation systems RF upgrade New or improved beam instrumentation Modifications to main magnet cooling circuits + shimming; replacement of several additional magnets New extraction kicker, new recombination kicker and septa Huge cabling campaign!

PSB LS2 Planning First 1.5 months also needed for radiation cool-down (2w for standard works after stop of run) Cooling system renovation: start dismantling transfer line cooling stations; time-critical item for the PSB (7m min. duration); non-negligible risk of delays  possible mitigation? Min. cabling campaign duration: 9 months! (3 shifts/day) Means beam commissioning could only start after 15.5 months  first beam to PS after 18 months  Delivery of LHC production beam to PS: after 18.5 months MPS testing Renovation of PSB cooling system Dismantling and installation in parallel Cabling campaign Run in new RF system 2w + 1m 7m 5m Beam commissioning 3m 5.5m 9m Equipment tests and HV DC conditioning BE.KFA14L1 5m Ventilation consolidation (work in tunnel possible, but partly no redundancy) Ventilation consolidation (work in tunnel possible, but partly no redundancy) 12m Start connecting and testing equipment After 2.5m first beam to PS MPS testing 2m MPS Testing (new MPS building) Close PSB PROBLEM! (3.5m) 8.5m

PS LS2 Planning Summary Radiation cool-down: 1 month General access: after 2 months Assumed duration of cabling campaign: <9 months Many LIU-related activities already carried out during LS1 Magnets: new vertical correctors and normal/skew quadrupoles (2 GeV) – 5 months; replace PFW – 1 year (consolidation) New injection kicker, bumper, septum – 4 months RF: duration defined by general maintenance BI: not time-critical (BWS, BLMs, injection SEM grid, IPM?) Vacuum, electrical services, … Close PS: after 13 months 3 weeks of hardware test and 3 weeks of cold check-out (inter-leaved) Ready for beam from PSB: after 14.5 months

SPS LS2 Planning Start of shutdown works: <2 months Restart: ~3 months BI activities (BGI, BSRT, IMM, head-/tail m., BLM, MOPOS, wire scanners) 200 MHz RF: ~12.5 months EN-STI (new external dump etc.) TE-ABT (fast rise-time kicker for ions etc.) TE-EPC (MSE-septa power supply) Replacement of faulty magnets a-C coating of 6 sectors: 12 months Cabling campaigns: estimated 10 months CV maintenance

SPS LS2 Planning Summary  General access: after 2 months  Critical interventions:  200 MHz upgrade: 12.5 months; cannot be split  aC coating: 12 months  Cabling campaigns?  End of LS2 works: after 14.5 months  Patrols, DSO tests (~2 weeks)  6 weeks for magnet + EPC tests  ~2 weeks cold checkout  ready to receive beam from the PS after 16.5 months  1 month for beam commissioning (very short; new SPS RF beam control!)  First beam (LHCPILOT) available for LHC: after 17.5 months

Preliminary Conclusions Connection Linac4 to PSB:  End of run until injection of LHCPILOT into the LHC without ion runs: 9 months LS2 (US1+2): Limited by PSB activities (cabling)  First beam (LHCPILOT) to the PS: after 18 months  PS ready for beam from PSB: after 14.5 months  Beam commissioning: 3 weeks  SPS ready for beam from PS: after 16.5 months  Beam commissioning: 1 month  First injection of LHCPILOT into the LHC: after 19.5 months  Should gain >2 months in PSB!
