MdBio Foundation Overview History (Since 1995) – Started as an industry support organization for Maryland’s Biotech and Life Science Industry Since 2003 – Focus on STEM Education and Workforce Development K12 - Directly served +120,000 students and +2,000 educators, across every school district in Maryland Workforce Development – Leverage existing programs and resources provide meaningful “hands-on” experiences for long-term unemployed to explore STEM careers. Meeting the Need | MdBio Foundation Our approach uses STEM to explore real-world, problem-centric curriculum that bridges school, community, health and business. MdBio Foundation Organizational Goals 1. Build awareness of STEM careers 2. Increase diversity in the STEM workforce 3. Build a pipeline of qualified professionals to work in Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic Region

Vehicle of Change MdBioLab is a custom-built 45 ft. mobile laboratory serving schools throughout the state of Maryland. Problem-based learning through authentic STEM career experiences Aligns to CCSS, NGSS and Maryland Science Content Standards Increases experience and confidence with laboratory concepts and techniques Improves attitudes towards science and science careers. Alleviates budgetary burdens of laboratory science on schools Increases teacher self- efficacy with scientific concepts, theories and equipment Teachers report increased student interest in lab-based science. Teachers report increased student interest in doing more lab-based science in school.

Summary: 2015 STEM Education Survey 523 U.S. Online Respondents –> 85% with advanced degrees –> 50% in the scientific workforce for over 15 years –39% women; 61% men; across multiple job sectors Topline Results –Given a choice, the vast majority of respondents would pick the same educational pathway (72%) and the same career pathway (76%) again. –58 percent of those surveyed decided go into STEM prior to college. –Veteran STEM professionals credit real-world, hands-on experience as the most critical factor in landing a STEM job. –A majority (62%) feel they have made an impact on the world through their science. –In the workplace, the majority of respondents most highly value: interest in their own work, flexibility, and independence.
