Objectives: 1.Explain what academic dishonesty is according to the Purdue University Senate. 2.Identify appropriate and effective ways of addressing violations of academic integrity. 3.Identify resources available at Purdue to help you address academic integrity issues. 3

University Senate Statement The commitment of the acts of cheating, lying, stealing, and deceit in any of their diverse forms (such as the use of ghost-written papers, the use of substitutes for taking examinations, the use of illegal cribs, plagiarism, and copying during examinations) is dishonest and must not be tolerated. Moreover, knowingly to aid and abet, directly or indirectly, other parties in committing dishonest acts is in itself dishonest” (University Senate Document 72-18, December 15, 1972). 5

6 Types of Academic Dishonesty Cheating: intentionally using or attempting to use unauthorized materials, information, or study aids in any academic exercise. Fabrication: intentional and unauthorized falsification or invention of information or citation in an academic exercise. Plagiarism: deliberate adoption or reproduction of ideas/words/ statements of another person as one’s own without acknowledgement. Facilitating Academic Dishonesty: intentionally or knowingly helping or attempting to help another (to cheat) Misrepresentation: providing false information to an instructor concerning an academic exercise. Purdue University also includes forgery as a form of misrepresentation. Sabotage: actions that prevent others from completing their work.
