Why does this matter? Because health is important! Because health care is also a political issue  How can what you know about politics in the US and UK be applied to a real issues? Because of current health issues and their possible impacts on the world  Ebola  Obesity  Environmental health concerns

Healthcare in the UK Healthcare is provided by the National Health Service  Created in 1948  Belief that healthcare and health policy is the responsibility of the government Universal healthcare  Cares for people on basis of need and not ability to pay Secretary of State for Health  Works in Department of Health

Healthcare in the UK How is it funded?  Taxation on income NHS is largest employer in the UK  1.5 million people Remember devolution?  Healthcare is devolved to Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland What else does the NHS do?  Regulatory, makes sure hospital are safe  Research  Data collection on patients

Healthcare in the UK Ruling party (Conservatives) set policies  224 total policies  Policy =“what the government is trying to achieve and why”  8 policies for public health currently  Giving all children a healthy start in life  Creating a lasting legacy from the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games  Reducing drugs misuse and dependence  Reducing smoking  Reducing obesity and improving diet  Helping more people survive cancer  Planning for health emergencies  Reducing harmful drinking

Politics and Healthcare in the UK What are the three main parties in the UK?  Conservatives  Main beliefs No major cuts in healthcare spending Recruit more doctors A move towards partial privatization  Liberal Conservatives  Main beliefs More spending From progressive taxation  Labour  Main beliefs Stop privatization Increase health spending From tobacco tax, corporation taxation

Healthcare in the US A much different and seemingly larger problem in the United States The U.S. spends a lot of money on healthcare  But does not have universal healthcare Healthcare has been a main debate among Republicans and Democrats during Obama’s duration as president!  Republicans: private healthcare  Democrats: less privatization will lead to more coverage

Video What is the name of the health care Act? (list two or more!) When was it passed? What are some problems that the bill aimed to fix? What will happen if you don’t have insurance by 2014? Will all states be implementing the plan in the same way?

Video

The Affordable Care Act Passed March 23, 2010 Often called “Obamacare” because it was a part of his plan, Democrats supported it Aims to solve long-term problems with healthcare in the U.S.  Millions of people are uninsured  People who have insurance tend to pay more for it than they would in other industrialized countries Aims to make affordable insurance more available Progressive changes  Many people will not be affected  Creates a marketplace online where people can see their insurance options

Is the ACA working? According to an article from The New York Times…  Yes?  And No The number of uninsured people have gone down For most, insurance has become more affordable Other information---too soon to tell

Biggest health issues facing US and UK Industrialized countries are facing longer life expectancies  Which means chronic diseases like cancer are going up  Treating them effectively and inexpensively is a major issue Obesity  UK has highest obesity rates in Europe  Costs to economy: 3 billion pounds a year  In the US, childhood obesity has doubled in past 30 years  year-olds=21% obese  Type 2 diabetes
