Europe #1 Spain/España Spain: The Spanish name for Spain is España. The currency used in Spain is the Euro. Football (soccer) is the most popular sport in Spain.

Europe #2Germany  The name for Germany in the German language is Deutschland.  Large German companies include BMW, Adidas, SAP, Mercedes- Benz, Nivea, Audi, Bayer, Volkswagen and Siemens.  Football (soccer) is the most popular sport in Germany.

Europe #3France/le Francais  The name France comes from the Latin word Francia, which means 'country of the Franks'.  The Louvre is the most visited art museum in the world. The famous Mona Lisa painting is on display in this museum.  During World War II, Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy in northern France. The first day of these landings is called D-Day.

Europe #4Italy  Italy is officially known as the Italian Republic.  Rome is the capital city of Italy.  The most popular sport in Italy is football (soccer). Italy has won four world cups, the last one being in  Italy has many earthquakes and volcanoes due to the conflict between the Eurasian and the African tectonic plates.

Europe #5Norway  The capital and largest city in Norway is Oslo.  Norway is home to the world's longest road tunnel, with a length of 15.3 miles.  Football (soccer) has the highest participation level of any sport in Norway.

Europe #6Sweden  The capital and largest city in Sweden is Stockholm.  Forests cover over 50% of Sweden, there are also around 100,000 lakes and over 24,000 islands throughout the country. Sweden's right to public access laws allows these areas to be fully accessible by the public.  Ice hockey and football (soccer) are Sweden's main sports, other popular sports include handball, golf, gymnastics, athletics and cross country skiing.

Europe #7Finland  Helsinki is the capital and largest city of Finland.  The national sport of Finland is called Pesapallo, which is a bit like baseball.  A nickname for Finland is "land of midnight sun". During summer the sun does not drop below the horizon in the north instead shining all day and night.

Europe #8Belgium The largest city and capital of Belgium is Brussels. Belgium is world-famous for waffles. There are 3 main types of Belgian waffles, the most common is Liege waffles which are eaten like a cookie. Football (soccer) is one of the most popular sports in Belgium along with cycling, tennis, judo and swimming.

Europe #9Austria  German is the official language of Austria and is spoken by over 88% of the population.  Vienna is the capital and largest city of Austria.  Football (soccer) is a popular team sport in Austria. Alpine skiing is a very popular sport in Austria, as are snowboarding and ski-jumping.

Europe #10Scotland  Scotland is a part on the United Kingdom, along with England, Wales and Northern Ireland  Scotland includes over 700 islands.  Scotland has a unique culture with traditions such as bagpipes, kilts and highland dancing.

Europe #11Ireland  Irish, or Irish Gaelic is the country's first official language, however the second official language English is more commonly spoken.  Gaelic football and hurling are traditional sports of Ireland and remain the most popular sports in the country.  Shamrock (type of clover) is the national symbol of Ireland and along with the harp it is a registered trademark of the country.

Europe #12Iceland  The capital city of Iceland is Reykjavík which is the most northern capital city in the world.  In 1980, Iceland became the first country to elect a women president.  Some Icelandic people still believe in elves, trolls, and other mythical characters.  Handball is the main traditional sport of Iceland. Other popular sports include football (soccer), basketball, swimming and horseback riding.

Europe #15Poland  Warsaw is the largest city and capital of Poland.  Poland’s national symbol is the White Eagle.  The most popular sport in Poland is football (soccer). Other popular sports include basketball, handball, volleyball, boxing, and weightlifting.

Europe #16Hungary  Budapest is the capital and largest city in Hungary.  The currency of Hungary is called forint.  Hungarian's have invented many important items over the years, including the ballpoint pen and Erno Rubik invented the Rubik's Cube.

Europe #17Netherlands  The Netherlands is also known as Holland.  The capital and largest city in the Netherlands is Amsterdam.  Many of the world's tomatoes, cucumbers and flowers are exported from the Netherlands.  About 1/3 of the Netherlands lies below sea level. It has one of the most sophisticated anti-flood systems in place anywhere in the world.

Europe #18Russia  Russia is the largest country in the world.  The capital and largest city in Russia is Moscow.  The currency used in Russia is the ruble.  Basketball, ice hockey and football (soccer) are popular sports in Russia.

Europe #19Switzerland  The capital of Switzerland is Bern, while the largest city is Zürich.  For over 190 years Switzerland has been a neutral country during wartimes.  Switzerland is very famous for its chocolate, cheese, banking system, watches and alpine mountain areas.

Europe #20Serbia The capital of Serbia is Belgrade. The currency of Serbia is Serbian Dinar (RSD). Serbia is the largest raspberry exporter, accounting for one third of all the raspberries in the world. Most Serbian last names end with the letters “ic”.
