VICTORIES AND DEFEATS

Those darn Tories ■There were those, despite everything, that believed because they had sworn a solemn oath to the king, they should remain loyal to him ■The radicals treated these Tories with cruelty including tarring and feathering them ■Loyalists or tories formed their own armies to help the British ■Is this America’s first civil war?

African American Soldiers ■George Washington (who owned slaves) at first did not want enslaved men fighting on his side ■He changed his mind when Britain began promising slaves their freedom if they joined the British side ■How could the colonies continue to enslave African Americans who were willing to fight and die for the freedom of all Americans?

Patriot Spies ■Washington’s spies risked death if caught ■A man named Haym Salomon who spoke many languages spoke with a group of German soldiers and got them to leave the British army!

Revolutionary Women ■Many women supported their men by becoming nurses during the war ■When Margaret Corbin’s husband died in battle, she took over at the cannon until she was wounded herself ■Deborah Sampson was among a few women who disguised themselves as men to fight

Crisis Mode ■The Patriots won and lost several important battles, but they faced their greatest challenge in a time of no combat ■The winter at Valley Forge near Philadelphia was one of the toughest moments of the war ■2,500 soldiers died of disease ■Thomas Paine wrote The American Crisis No. 1 to boost spirits

Native Americans pick sides ■The Oneida and the Tuscarora valued trade with the Americans and sided with them ■The other tribes (Mohawk, Seneca, Onodaga) sided with the British ■Their leader Joseph Brant hoped the British would keep the colonists from moving onto Indian lands ■The losing side lost all land…the winning side got a small portion ■Most left for Canada
