YEAR 10 FILM CAT ANSWERS

PART A: TERMINOLOGY 1. Establishing shot 2. Extreme close-up 3. High Angle 4. Montage 5. Low key lighting 6. Diegetic sound 7. Low Angle 8. Tilt 9. Point of view shot 10. Long shot Achieved = 5-6 correct Merit = 7-8 correct Excellence = 9-10

PART B: QUESTION 1: Washington D.C America U.S.A

TThe Washington monument CCIA agents UU.S Airforce written on the missile TThe computerised subtitles/captions onscreen. PPresidents seal on inside of laptop case AAmerican police cars QUESTION 2:

 Tracking = Achieved  Tracking + effect = Merit  Tracking is used on the CIA agent to follow his movement and see the interchange between himself and another agent. QUESTION 3:

QUESTION 4:  Long shot or Establishing shot = Achieved  Effect = Merit Used to establish Washington as the setting.

QUESTION 5:  Point of view shot = Achieved  Effect = Merit  Helps show that the CIA agent has noticed the pigeon’s interest in his donut. We see this through the perspective of the CIA agent – almost as though we are seeing through his eyes.

QUESTION 6:  Shot: Close-up Movement: Zoom = Achieved  Effect = Merit  The zoom in and close- up focuses the audience on the briefcase. This signals that it is of some importance. Or that the pigeon has become trapped inside.

QUESTION 7:  Technique =Achieved  Effect = Merit  High angle shot  Used to make the CIA agent appear weak or vulnerable in comparison to the Pigeon. OR  Over the shoulder shot  you can see that the CIA agent is the pigeon’s target

 Mood = Panic, fear, danger, excitement, anxiety, anticipation, triumph  Diegetic = horns, yelling, screaming, crashing, explosions, laser firing,  Non-diegetic = music as doughnut is held above the flames, low, rumbling. Music stops becomes quiet as CIA agent approaches the Pigeon with the doughnut. Short sharp dinging sounds, almost like a ticking clock. Music as the CIA agent leaps forward and Pigeon returns to briefcase becomes louder and lower, trumpet sounds. Music when donut is thrown into the air rises and becomes faster, louder. QUESTION 8:

 Achieved = The mood is one of panic, fear and confusion. You can hear the laser firing, honking of horns, people screaming, cars crashing and explosions.  Merit =The mood is one of panic, fear and confusion. You can hear the laser firing, honking of horns, people screaming, cars crashing and explosions. These sounds combine to give an overall impression of the chaos caused by the pigeon.  Excellence =The mood is one of panic, fear and confusion. You can hear the laser firing, honking of horns, people screaming, cars crashing and explosions. These sounds combine to give the impression of the chaos caused by the pigeon. An atmosphere of anticipation is created when the CIA agent uses the doughnut as bait to stop the pigeon’s rampage. The music suddenly becomes quiet and slow paced which creates tension as we are unsure if the agent will be successful. QUESTION 8:

QUESTION 9:  Close-up = Achieved  Effect = Merit  The close-up helps show that the donut has landed on the fire button and launched the nuclear missile.

QUESTION 10:  Over the shoulder shot = Achieved  Effect = Merit  The audience can see what the CIA agent is looking at. In this case he is staring at the missile launching itself from inside the Washington monument.

QUESTION 11:  Shallow Focus = Achieved  Effect = Merit  The background it blurred out to focus your eye on a detail in the foreground. In this case it is the pigeon which has just landed itself on the briefcase and the CIA agent aiming the rocket towards it.

QUESTION 12:  Slow Motion = Achieved  Effect = Merit  Slow motion emphasises the movement of the pigeon as it tries to catch the donut. It also helps create suspense as viewers are unsure if the agent has fired at the pigeon and that is what it is trying to avoid.

 Mood – initially one of threat, danger (loud, fast paced)  Changes to relief, victory, triumphant, peaceful (slows in pace, quieter)  Purpose – The initial music is used to build fear and create suspense as to whether the CIA agent can destroy the missile before it reaches its target. Once the missile is destroyed the music makes the audience feel relaxed as the danger is now over and the crisis resolved.  Achieved = identifies one mood and some description of the music  Merit = as for Achieved but also explains how the music changes  Excellence = as for Merit but also explains purpose or effect QUESTION 13:

 Achieved = identifies the shot as a Long shot  Merit = LS + contrast explained E.g In the opening scene viewers see an organised, clean city street. In the ending scene the contrast is obvious. The city has been destroyed by the pigeon. Viewers see cars on fire, damages buildings and only a plume of smoke where the Washington monument used to be. Debris from the missile which was hidden inside is now buried into the pavement.   Excellence = as for Merit but links this contrast to a theme or message. E.g This contrast helps show the consequences of being too greedy. The pigeon destroyed Washington city all because he wanted a whole doughnut instead of just a piece. OR This film implies that America has hidden weapons. Perhaps even in popular public areas that nobody suspects. May include some mention about the dangers of nuclear weapons. QUESTION 14:
