Participants will: Have a general understanding of Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and their implementation in your library program Understand the connection between Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and NGSS Explore implications and suggestions for Collection Development ANN (3 minutes)

3D NGSS ANN (5 minutes) Handout- 3D Buddy Triangle Either have participants draw a triangle on the back of a piece of paper, or run copies for this activity. On their triangle, participants will run around the room locating a partner for each of the three D’s -Grade Level Ban (Blue/practices) -Another/Different district (Orange/core ideas) -Someone you don’t know (Green/crosscutting concepts)

NGSS Adopted States Rhode Island Kentucky Kansas Maryland Vermont California Delaware Washington District of Columbia Nevada Oregon Illinois New Jersey Virgin Islands West Virginia Puerto Rico Arkansas ANN (1 minute) This will probably change by next summer. More states are currently participating in CCSS.

Washington’s NGSS Involvement & Process Summer 2011 to Present DEVELOPMENT K-12 Framework for Science Education NGSS Drafting Process Confidential Drafts Summer 2011 WA INVOLVEMENT: - WA Selected as NGSS Lead State – Fall 2011 - Drafting Process – Fall 2011 – Spring 2012 - Statewide educator, stakeholder input REVIEW/INPUT Public Review Revision Process - Student input - National input - Comments on Final Drafts ADOPTION States have discretion to voluntarily adopt NGSS Final April 2013 WA STATUS: - Comparisons - Bias and Sensitivity - SBE Presentations Adoption October 2013 BUILD AWARENESS & CAPACITY State Collaboration and Sharing WA STATUS: Part of 8 state collaborative (early adopters) TRANSITION & APPLICATION - Intentional transition plans - Examination of instructional materials and resources - Assessment system adjustments We are here ANN (1 minute) WA state science starts ARE NGSS. We adopted NGSS in 2013. 8/5/2015

CCSS and NGSS Transitioning to NGSS Standards in WA 2011-12 2012-13 2013-14 2014-15 2015-16 2016-1 Phase 1: CCSS and NGSS Exploration Phase 2: Build Awareness & Begin Building Statewide Capacity Phase 3: Build Statewide Capacity and Classroom Transitions Phase 4: Statewide Application and Assessment Ongoing: Statewide Coordination and Collaboration to Support ANN (1 minute)

Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) = Washington State Science Learning Standards (WSSLS) ANN (1 minute)

Guiding document The Framework principles…. Children are born investigators Understanding builds over time Science and Engineering require both knowledge and practice Connecting to students’ interests and experiences is essential Focusing on core ideas and practices Promoting equity Click here to download: A Framework for K12 Science Education ANN (3 minutes) The Framework is the foundational work for NGSS. It is available for FREE from the Hyperlink. It is important as a cross-referencing document.

SCIENCE & ENGINEERING PRACTICES CROSSCUTTING CONCEPTS Three dimensional standards, Three dimensional instruction, Three dimensional curriculum. DISCIPLINARY CORE IDEAS SCIENCE & ENGINEERING PRACTICES CROSSCUTTING CONCEPTS ANN Standards take the form of performance expectations defined through combinations of elements of the three dimensions that progress across grade levels

THE STANDARDS – Three Dimensions Crosscutting Concepts Patterns Cause and effect Scale, proportion and quantity Systems and system models Energy and matter Structure and function Stability and change Disciplinary Core Ideas Physical Sciences Life Sciences Earth and Space Sciences Engineering, Technology and Applications of Science Science & Engineering Practices Ask questions (for science) and define problems (for engineering) Develop and use models Plan and carry out investigations Analyze and interpret data Use mathematics and computational thinking Construct explanations (for science) and design solutions (for engineering) Engage in argument from evidence Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information ANN (5-minutes) plus time for video (7 minutes) Add video introducing the three D’s.

ANN Click the triangle to play video. Video link of broken-- https://www.teachingchannel.org/videos/next-generation-science-standards-achieve

The NGSS are written as Performance Expectations (PE) ANN (1 minute) 35 min. NGSS will require contextual application of the three dimensions by students. Rope scenario. NGSS is stronger with the three dimensions (i.e., wrapped together, dependent upon one another.) Focus is on how and why as well as what Start Acronym chart…PE will be added

Why NGSS? Clarity Collaboration Student Success Same The NGSS are focused on what’s most important. They are coherent and clear. Collaboration States can pool resources and expertise to implement and potentially assess the NGSS. Student Success The NGSS are benchmarked to high national and international standards. Students will develop the knowledge and skills they need to be successful. They are focused on all students. Same Expectations are the same for students across most states, so they don’t lose ground when they move from one state to another. ANN (slide 14-16 20 minutes) Reference Handout: STEM Teaching Tool #14 & How will Science Education Change-Add hyperlink to the handout…screenshot both the handout and put on slide

WHAT’S DIFFERENT WITH THE NGSS? Emphasis on being scientists and engineers practices vs. collection of facts Emphasis on learning context Integration of engineering Informal and community partners Contemporary science Focus on equity http://www.ssec.si.edu/blog/no-child-left-behind-nclb-and-the-laser-model ANN Handout: National Research Council (NRC) chart--How will science education change with the NGSS? Find your “Orange Ideas” Buddy. Read article with buddy and pull out ideas that answer the what/why/shifts. Presenters: Create a What/WHY/SHIFTS chart…fill in by asking participants to respond with information they have learned from the previous slides and the NRC chart. 8/5/2015
