Children with elevated lead levels in their bodies can suffer from: Damage to the brain & nervous system which results in lower IQ Affects a child’s ability to think, learn, or behave Slowed growth Hearing problems Headaches Children who appear healthy can have dangerous levels of lead in their bodies. Lead is also harmful to adults. Pregnant women exposed to lead can transfer lead to their fetuses. Children can swallow lead dust as they eat, play, and do other normal hand-to-mouth activities. People consume lead in a variety of ways A blood test is the only way to find out if you or a family member already has lead in their system. Effects continued…

Lead-based paint was used in more than 38 million homes until it was banned for residential use in Projects that disturb painted surfaces can create dust and endanger you and your family. Illinois law requires health provider to obtain a blood lead test or to apply a targeted blood lead testing approach. Facts About Lead-Based Paint

Owner of rental units may not evict tenant without legal cause for 12 months after the final inspection. Occupant applies at MCCD’s office in Edwardsville After eligibility is determined, a Lead Inspection Risk Assessment is conducted which determines the lead based paint hazards on each unit. Work specifications are generated from that report. Program Process

Job is given to a lead licensed contractor to perform lead hazard control activities. The contractor calls for a clearance once the job is complete. A final inspection is conducted by one of Madison County Community Development’s inspector to ensure completion and quality of work. Program Process continued…
