Billy’s Goat Problem  Billy and his family live in a rural area on a big piece of land. Their family goat likes to wander off their property and eat the grass in the neighbor’s yard. Even when penned in, the goat will jump out of the pen and get into trouble.

Find a Solution  Billy’s dad asked him to help solve this problem with his goat. He gave him 600 feet of fencing and 100 feet of rope with a stake to tie the goat to, however he doesn’t have to use all of the materials.  Help Billy decide how to use the materials to fence in and tie down the goat so that he will not jump the fence but will eat as much grass in the area as possible. Draw and label a diagram with the solution.

Bonus!!!  If Billy has to mow the grass that the goat cannot reach to eat in the yard, how many square feet of grass will be left to mow?

Self Evaluate  Evaluate how well you solved the problem ___/2 Neatness of diagram ___/2 Shape of yard () ___/2 Shape goat eats () ___/2 Length of rope () ___/2 Area of circle goat eats (sqft) ___/2 Area of square (sqft) ___/2 Area left to mow (sqft) ___/14 Total
