Keys

Determine the Strength of the Formation. The Strong side is determined by counting the number of Eligible Receivers Outside of the Tackles. If one side has more Eligible Receivers Outside of the Tackles than the other side, it is the strong side. If the number of Eligible Receivers Outside of the Tackles is the same, then the formation is balanced.

Keys 1.FJ, SJ Widest eligible receiver on your side of the formation 2.BJ Second widest eligible receiver to the strength of the formation Balanced Formations:  With Double twins … Second widest to L’s side  Other Balanced … 1 st back out of the back field If back goes in motion, he is your key. 3.L, LJ Next widest receiver not covered by FJ, SJ or BJ 4.ALL After the snap do not release too quickly in assuming zone responsibility

The Important Things

R: Make the call U: Front Stake L: Spot the clip LJ: Line up L BJ: Hold Ball FJ: Clear area so measurement is visible to press box SJ: Set box at front stake, keep previous down on box FJ/SJ: Have new ball ready if measurement is in side zone Measurements FJ

Timeouts R:Quickly take position, well clear of officials and players, and be ready to handle any emergency U:Take charge of ball making sure it does not move L, LJ: Assume positions near team huddles on your side of the field SJ:Take position to communicate with TV Liaison FJ,BJ: Position halfway between teams and sideline. L,LJ,FJ,SJ: Don’t allow substitution infractions All: Look smart … Parade Rest.

Penalty Enforcement Throw flag and keep officiating 2 flags in same area, officials confer to make sure they have same foul, only one goes to R if they have the same foul R after receiving information give preliminary signal to press box FJ & SJ report infraction to sideline R give options to captain R review enforcement with U

Penalty Enforcement (Cont.)‏ U mark off penalty LJ hold enforcement spot L go to succeeding spot U don’t put ball down until you are in agreement with L & LJ R give final signal to press box FJ, SJ, & BJ cover ball, cover flags, retrieve flags All: –Never leave the ball uncovered –Cover and retrieve flags –Make sure enforcement is right

Points of Emphasis Bean Bags –Drop don’t throw Signals –All signals given while stationary –All touchdown signals given while straddling the goal line, never mirror touchdown –Count one-one thousand before signaling TD –Only Incomplete, never complete –No signals when reporting fouls –Umpire no signal 7 (dead ball)‏ –Correct touchback signal –Correct incomplete signal

Points of Emphasis (Cont.)‏ Wing Officials –Almost all spots should be given by L or LJ, square off, don’t come in past top of the numbers … unless it is a critical spot or goal line –When ball is dead, accordion in, not past top of the numbers –FJ/SJ cover OOB action, and be prepared to go past the L/LJ if they are holding progress –Keep ball boys off the field … ball boys can kill you!!! SJ, FJ give them pre-game instructions –On all COP new ball from LJ/FJ side –When SJ and FJ have the goal line, L and LJ stop at the 3 –No one handed signals
