2015 ASCE Presidents & Governors Forum Best Practice #1 –Effective Use of Social Media Josue Vaglienty, PE ASCE Orange County Branch September 20, 2015

Social Media Expert?  Big range in terms of being a Social Media expert  There is no one demographic  Anyone can do it (to whatever degree) they want

Why Participate in Social Media?  Building an audience for your ASCE Section/Branch  Generate content (photos, articles, videos, etc.) that may appeal to other social media users  Promote events (before, during, after)  Leveraging relationships as your base grows (other individuals/organizations follow you and vice-versa.  Acknowledgement of your peers, giving thanks/kudos, staying on top of relevant info in our industry

Facebook  Biggest audience  1.3 Billion users  Accounts for Branch, Younger Member, Student Groups  Invites to events  Feature to switch between posting as an ASCE “host” or your own account

Twitter  Brief 140 character tweets are quick and can be viewed easily.  270 Million Users  Leveraging relationships – similar individuals or groups can follow your ASCE org.  Works best when there’s a dedicated “twitter champion” to post info.  Firms/agencies that sponsor ASCE like being mentioned

LinkedIn  Great for maintaining professional relationships  Quality over quantity  Personal preference - Always meet the person before inviting them into your network  Public or Private group membership

YouTube  Join the video-frenzy  Create a YouTube playlist of videos for presentation recaps, social events, continuing education, K- 12 building projects, etc.  Link other videos that may be relevant to your local ASCE Section/Branch  Embed videos into your webpage or share via Facebook or Twitter.

Intagram  Parent company is Facebook  200 million users  Photo/Video - sharing in private setting  Specifically designed for mobile devices (39% of all internet use is on a smartphone/tablet)  Very easy to use – can become “addicting”!  You don’t own your photos.

Tips for Social Media  Keep your content up to date  Consider using Hootsuite for managing social media posts  Always remember who your audience is (consider separate accounts for ASCE Branch, ASCE YMF, ASCE Student Chapters)  Promote events (before, during, after)  Follow your local media outlets (newspapers, magazines, etc.)
