Thermal Energy on the Move

Thermal energy travels as heat from higher temperature to low temperature. 3 Ways Thermal Energy can move 1. Conduction 2. Convection 3. Radiation

1. Conduction- the transfer of energy through matter by direct contact of particles.

Ex: Spoon in a pot of boiling water. The heat from the stove heats the pot which heats the water which heats the spoon. What are some other examples of conduction?

2. Convection- the transfer of energy by the bulk movement of matter.

Hot water rises Cooler water sinks Cools at the surface

-This happens when fluid particles move from 1 location to another, carrying energy with them. Ex: hot-air balloon What are some other examples of convection?

Radiation- the transfer of energy in the form of waves. -Does not require matter.

There are no particles between the Sun and the Earth. ? RADIATION

Ex: Sun-rays -Only radiant energy that is absorbed changes to thermal energy (heat). What are some other examples of radiation?

Questions to think about 1. What are some pros and cons about conduction? 2. What are some pros and cons about convection? 3. What are some pros and cons about radiation? 4. Rank the type of heat transfer from most important to least important. Why??

Label the heat movement as conduction, convection or radiation. 1.Lava Lamp2.Fire3.Spoon in soup ConvectionRadiationConduction

Exit Ticket Answer the following questions on a separate sheet of paper. 1. What type of heat transfer is a radiometer? 2. Write a paragraph comparing and contrasting conduction, convection and radiation.

Promoting Thermal Energy Conductors- allow heat to move easily through them. Ex: Metals Solids Solids

Reducing Thermal Energy Insulators- do not allow heat to move easily through them. Ex: Wood Plastic Plastic Glass Glass Gas Gas
