Understanding Reading Comprehension What is reading comprehension ? –I–It is defined as the level of understanding of a passage or text Decoding/Fluency/Comprehension –T–There is a linear progression to great reading –W–Without decoding there is no fluency, and without fluency there is no comprehension

Student Reading Comprehension Strategies Making Connections Questioning Evaluating Visualizing Synthesizing Inferring Summarizing

Predicting Think about what’s going to happen and make predictions based on what they know and what they have read.

Monitoring stop to think about your reading and know what to do when you don’t understand.

Determining Importance Determine the difference between what you need to know and what is just interesting. *This is used mainly with nonfiction reading.
