Presentation transcript:

Standardization, Software, Integrated Navigation & Integrated Radio Communication Systems - developments on the bridge Frances Baskerville Secretary-General, CIRM

What is CIRM? Comité International Radio-Maritime The International Maritime Trade Organization - members are: Electronic navigation and communication equipment manufacturers Systems builders Satellite and Service providers

The Brief… “Frances, I need a presentation on the immediate future… (not the * airy-fairy future …) and the shape of bridge equipment to come.” (* Fanciful and unrealistic …)

CIRM - some areas currrently taking our attention … 1.Standardization of navigation displays 2.Software maintenance onboard 3.Integrated Navigation System (INS) 4.Integrated Radio Communication System (IRCS)

Standardization of navigation displays … Industry is responding to the needs of the mariner: Standardized default display settings Save / recall settings Harmonization of the Human-Machine Interface (HMI) New / revised standards for key equipment incorporate these aspects Integrated Navigation System (IEC ) Radar (IEC 62388) ECDIS (IEC upcoming revision)

Software Maintenance … Modern systems are based on software, which is periodically updated Systems may perform incorrectly if not running latest software (e.g. ECDIS) No obligation for a shipowner to update How do manufacturers ensure software is updated? How do they ensure it is updated properly? CIRM is working with other bodies (e.g. BIMCO) to come to a solution. Involves a wider consideration – “Service Lifecycle Management”

Software Maintenance – ‘Service Lifecycle Management’ (SLM)

Integrated Navigation System (INS) – what is it? INS Integrates key navigation equipment and processes Radar, ECDIS, AIS, Conning, Alarms, etc. Comprises multifunction task-oriented displays Features standardisation of display interface A number of CIRM members are developing INS and one has already brought INS to the market

INS … & e-navigation INS can be seen as the onboard e-navigation platform and meets 3 of the 5 IMO e-navigation solutions: Solution 1 Improved, harmonized and user-friendly bridge design Solution 2Means for standardized and automated auto-reporting Solution 3Improved reliability, resilience and integrity of bridge equipment and navigation information Solution 4Integration and presentation of available information in graphical displays received via communication equipment Solution 5Improved Communication of VTS Service Portfolio

Integrated Radio Communication System (IRCS) – what is it? IRCS combines GMDSS radio systems such as VHF, MF/HF, Inmarsat-C & NAVTEX May also include non-GMDSS comms (e.g. VSAT) May be integrated with navigational equipment, including the INS Based on multi-function workstations - identical user interfaces and can be operated independently Like the INS, IRCS supports the goals of e-navigation. Also supports review of GMDSS being undertaken by IMO CIRM members now working with IEC to draft the IRCS testing standards

Our upcoming Annual Meeting … Join us in Annapolis, Maryland, USA : 28th April – 2nd May Frances Baskerville Secretary-General, CIRM
