Library as Publisher Movement: Ways Forward for Small Libraries Melody Layton McMahon (Thanks to Lisa Gonzalez for use of her presentation at 2015 ER&L Conference)

Journal--Transition New Theology Review—transition from print Jointly owned with WTU and they closed Published by Liturgical Press and they declined to continue publication My experience with OJS through editorship of Theological Librarianship “As previously announced, NTR will now be totally online, published by CTU through the resources of its Paul Bechtold Library. This will be an “open access” online journal, which means that anyone anywhere in the world who has access to the Internet will be able to read the rich contents of NTR free of charge. We wanted to adopt this format as a matter of principle, fulfilling the mission of Catholic Theological Union to serve the global Church.” v. 25, no.1, Fr. Donald Senior, President, CTU

Launch I was appointed co-editor as a faculty member As the publisher, the library… Purchased a server (also for use of our archive administered by the library) Installed OJS on server Purchased Adobe InDesign for layout Hired a proofreader (this is paid for by the journal) Later, the journal hired a layout editor First issue was published, September 2012

Defining Workflows Library as Publisher Provides server, OJS instance Trains editorial board Provides technical support Promotes and markets Editorial staffs Manage submissions Manage peer review process Copyedit Layout Proofread

Expanding, Maintaining, Promoting Registration for DOIs—CrossRef membership Sherpa Romeo listing DOAJ listing ISSN InfoBase Index—measures quality of journal in preparation for indexing Digitization of back issues—individual article level LOCKSS participation (through PKP) Library metadata license is shown in addition to our CC license Cataloged on OCLC, checked with A&I to see about continuation of indexing, added to our knowledge base Developed marketing materials

Future Plans Digitizing v. 1—9 with metadata at article level, getting these scanned now, will have to upload to OJS Adding new journals Theophilus—CTU student peer-reviewed journal JAANATE/Journal of the Association of the Asian/North American Theological Educators ???—offering varying levels of service as needed to journals who meet our mission and criteria

Monograph Publishing Open access online version with print on demand (if author desires print) Using same server as journals OMP installation—also PKP platform Library hires copy editor/proofreader and layout editor Uses CreateSpace for print on demand Already had ISBNs

First book published May 2015 Preaching Matters: A Praxis for Preachers by Bishop Sylvester Ryan and Deborah L Wilhelm Cataloged on OCLC with link sold on CreateSpace, ?? downloads Second book published October 2015 Married in Mission: A Handbook for Couples in Cross-Cultural Service by Alexis C. Kenny Cataloged on OCLC with link Author had 225 pre-publication orders from mission conference

Business Models for OA Publishing Journal approach-to-open-access#.VYI5iflVikq approach-to-open-access#.VYI5iflVikq Monograph access-e-books/ access-e-books/ (also to include journals)

Stats, Altmetrics Stats—OMP and OJS provide stats, Google Analytics Altmetrics Identifiers—URL, ORCID, OCLC ISBN, DOI, Repository URL Types of altmetrics (most of this information is from Plum Analytics webinar) Captures-when people bookmark or make favorite, save it to a reader Usage—downloads, views, clicks (can sort by abstract views, html views, PDF views, etc. (typically, library holdings fit here—number of OCLC holdings) Mentions—blog posts, reviews, Social Media—tweets, likes, shares Citations—in AI sources
