Facilitating the transition towards a circular economy Organization of American States, Washington DC Closed Looped Cycle Production in the Americas (CLCPA) Updated: November 17, 2014 Colombia Trinidad and Tobago Panama Ecuador

Agenda Global Trends Waste Management Linear Economy vs. Circular Economy Closed Looped Cycle Program-T&T Project Closed Looped Cycle Production in the Americas (CLCPA)

Global Trends Enviroment CO2 concentration beyond the safe upper limit. Scare of raw material- price variability. Urban air quality is deteriorating Waste is today generated faster than any other environmental pollutant. Social The World is getting crowded... Rapid and unmanaged urbanization... The global middle class is growing. Economic Consumption beyond limits. Externalities are still external. Higher prices of goods. Lineal Economy Dominates Closed Looped Cycle Production in the Americas (CLCPA)

The World in Closed Looped Cycle Production in the Americas (CLCPA)

.. Waste Management. Closed Looped Cycle Production in the Americas (CLCPA)

.. Practical Approaches to Waste Management. To inform people about their options to reduce waste generation and increase recycling and composting; Public education (such as product charges) to stimulate consumer behavior to reduce waste generation and increase recycling; Pricing Mechanisms Consumers separating recyclables paying a lower fee for waste disposal; User charges tied to the quantity of waste disposed To stimulate demand for products made with recycled post-consumer waste. Preferential procurement policies and pricing Closed Looped Cycle Production in the Americas (CLCPA) Raw Materials Product Manufacturing Use of Products Reuse Recycle 

.. Waste Hierarchy Rethink!! We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them (Albert Einstein) Closed Looped Cycle Production in the Americas (CLCPA)

Cradle to Grave vs. Cradle to Cradle TAKE MAKE DISPOSE Waste = Food Use Current Solar Income Celebrate Diversity Closed Looped Cycle Production in the Americas (CLCPA)

Eco-efficient vs. Eco-effective Sustainability The ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Closed Looped Cycle Production in the Americas (CLCPA)

Eco-Efficient vs. Eco-Effective Closed Looped Cycle Production in the Americas (CLCPA)

CLCPA Program Program Objective: Introduce and showcase the viability and applicability of Closed Looped Cycle Production design and manufacturing methodologies in the production sector of nations in the Americas as an innovative business development tool to mainly improve energy efficiency and environmental performance in the industrial sector and to increase the productivity, competitiveness and sustainability of businesses, and facilitate the transition toward circular economies throughout the region. Facilitating the transition towards a circular economy Increase awareness, knowledge, and collaboration among stakeholders (government, national enterprises, National Cleaner Production Centers (NCPC), Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) or chambers of commerce, etc.) about Closed Looped Cycle Production. Awareness Raising Prepare and present position papers to stakeholders to facilitate high-level policy dialogue on economic and environmental benefits of sustainable design and closed-looped cycle production methods necessary for incentivizing and supporting MSMEs adoption of Closed Loop Cycle Production. Analysis and Policy Advice Promote the application or adoption of Closed Looped Cycle Production methods (incl. Cradle-to-cradle, Cleaner Production, Sustainable Materials Management, or similar certifications and methods) by companies, in particular SMEs in participating countries Promote Application Closed Looped Cycle Production in the Americas (CLCPA)

Closed Looped Cycle Production in the Americas timeline * Over $1.3 million invested The initiative was conceived Request from the Ministry of Coordination of Production, Employment and Competitiveness National Closed Looped Cycle Production Program First Cradle-to-Cradle basic certified product in LAC Cleaner Production Center for Ecuador Inclusion of dedicated text in the National Development Plan Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Ministry of Commerce and Industry Ministry of Planning and Sustainable Development Sustainable Productive Development towards a Circular Economy in Colombia Development of Panama Green Label Finding a sustainable alternative packaging to replace the Styrofoam containers Closed Looped Cycle Production in the Americas (CLCPA)

Styrofoam Facts Isites.harvard.edu Made from Pretroleum not biodegradable /not recycled useful life of minutes or hours Takes up more space in landfills Contains Styrene and Benzene Polystyrene recycling, if, and when it is carried out properly, is not "closed loop" Closed Looped Cycle Production in the Americas (CLCPA)

Biopolymer Revolution. Closed Looped Cycle Production in the Americas (CLCPA)

CLCPA Project in Trinidad and Tobago (ongoing) Finding a sustainable alternative packaging to replace the Styrofoam containers Within the manufacturing sector the Printing and Packaging and the Food and Beverages are identified as the sub-sectors with the greatest potential for further growth and that warrant the Government’s attention and assistance from the CLCPA Program for their sustainable development. T&T Local Context Waste generation per capital in kg. Characterization 2012: Paper and paper board 28%, Plastics 22.2% and Textil: 17% Food and Beverage (F&B) and Printing and Packaging- (P&P) strategic sectors. P&P industry -leader in the CARICOM region. P&P linkage P&F Styrofoam commonly used for food containers. The food and drink industry is expected to grow by almost $43 billion combined by Political will to promote innovative packaging utilizing non traditional packaging and natural materials. Cost of waste handling in T&T ranged from US$ to US$ per metric ton. ( ) Closed Looped Cycle Production in the Americas (CLCPA)
