DPA or DPE for a Health Promoting School Model?

April 2008 What is the difference between DPE and DPA? CAHPERD says: Physical Education is a school subject designed to help children and youth develop the skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary for participating in active, healthy living. Physical activity is a movement of the body that expends energy; such as participation in sports, dance and exercise.

April 2008 Alberta Program of Studies says: The aim: is to enable individuals to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to lead an active, healthy lifestyle. Planning is NB to increase opportunities for learning and cannot be substituted with unstructured physical activity time, such as recess or free play.

April 2008 Achieving PE outcomes The outcomes of the PE program are achieved through involvement in a variety of physical activities.

April 2008 More approved words: Physical education places physical activity within a broader perspective of total fitness and well-being that encompasses the entire experience of movement – physical, mental, emotional and social dimensions. Students do not develop automatically the requisite KSAs that lead to an active lifestyle….

April 2008 What is Daily Physical Activity? In Alberta: all students in grades 1 – 9 will receive 30 minutes of physical activity through activities organized by the school. In Ontario – vigorous is added. In BC – includes non-school organized events such as dance class, etc.

April 2008 Issues - official Time/scheduling Facilities Lack of expertise High school implementation

April 2008 Issues - unofficial PE profession weighs in Health profession weighs in Minister weighs in

April 2008 DPA survey results Most schools are scheduling daily physical education classes to monitor the DPA requirements. The majority of respondents agreed that students are satisfied with the DPA opportunities provided to them. DPA has had a positive impact on student learning and the school environment, has increased student wellness, and is considered a positive initiative and a priority in their school. Principals and teachers indicated the biggest challenges to DPA implementation are scheduling and a lack of facilities and/or space.
