Improve It Use the mark scheme to improve your answer Write your improvements in red pen You need two pros and two cons for screening You need a conclusion statement It needs to be clear, with correct spelling and grammar.

Exemplar Answer The stent keeps the artery open, this allows more blood to flow through. The stent is inserted into the blood vessels using a balloon. The balloon is inflated to open the artery and the stent remains in place to keep the artery open. Write down the reasons why marks have been awarded for this question Mark Scheme Explain how a stent would be used to treat this condition (5 marks)

Which is the best answer? A.pH changes the shape of the active site on an enzyme molecule, stopping it fitting with the substrate molecule. B.pH changes the shape of the reaction site on a substrate molecule, stopping it fitting with the enzyme molecule. C.pH changes the shape of the enzyme molecule, preventing it reacting with the substrate molecule. More than one is correct, but which is the best?

How are enzymes involved in digestion? The enzyme amylase is produced in the salivary glands, the pancreas and the small intestine. This enzyme catalyses the breakdown of starch into sugars in the mouth and small intestine. Protease enzymes are produced by the stomach, the pancreas and the small intestine. These enzymes catalyse the breakdown of proteins into amino acids in the stomach and the small intestine. Lipase enzymes are produced by the pancreas and small intestine. These enzymes catalyse the breakdown of lipids (fats and oils) into fatty acids and glycerol in the small intestine. The liver produces bile, which is stored in the gall bladder before being released into the small intestine. Bile neutralises the acid that was added to food in the stomach. This provides alkaline conditions in which enzymes in the small intestine work most effectively.

Using stem cells In 2012 scientists in America were able to re-program embryonic stem cells to form into cartilage cells to produce a replacement human outer ear. The ear needed a blood supply to grow, so they implanted it under the skin of a laboratory mouse. The ear was eventually transplanted onto the head of a 9 year old boy who had lost his ear in a car accident and risked deafness. The boy is now able to hear normally and lead a normal life. Stem cells obtained in this way often result in the destruction of the developing embryo. Embryonic stem cells are the most useful of all stem cell types as they can turn into any type of body cell.
