Do Now Seat yourselves alphabetically by last name.

Bellringer What do you see? Write down your perception of this image.

Today We are going to answer the question, WHY DO WE ACT THE WAY WE DO? using the 6 perspectives on human behavior Our goal is to be able to explain WHY Ms. Knight is a horrible singer and why Teresa EATS ROCKS in 6 different ways.

Perspective in Psychology What does “perspective” mean?

In psychology… We look at human and animal behavior. But like anything in life, there are different ways to look at it.

I need 3 volunteers! Zipper Leather Strap When observing behavior, there are many different parts that we may focus on. We can only see the whole picture through a variety of approaches!

Perspective What are the different ways we can see this picture?

WHY IS SHE DOING THAT? SmU SmU JUST THINK TO YOURSELF AS YOU WATCH

WHY? In psychology, there are 6 ways to look at it…

#1. Biological Perspective Human behavior can be explained by heredity (genes) and brain structure. I am a good athlete because my father was a good athlete and he passed down good genes – Drugs, brain damage and genetics Usain AND Kennedys

How does this cartoon demonstrate the biological perspective?

GP-Biological Perspective WHY DOES TERESA EAT ROCKS?

Biological Perspective WHY AM I A HORRIBLE SINGER? Lack of on-key genes Damaged/Malfunctioning Brain Structure

Biological Perspective This guy is always angry. Explain WHY this might be the case from the biological perspective.

#2. Cognitive Perspective The way we THINK causes our behavior – MEMORY, LEARNING, PROBLEM SOLVING, DECISION MAKING Filling the car with gas

The brain and a computer

Cognitive Perspective “I know for sure what we dwell on is what we become.” “I think, therefore I am” How do these quotes reflect the cognitive perspective?

GP- Cognitive Perspective WHY DOES TERESA EAT ROCKS?

Cognitive Perspective WHY AM I A HORRIBLE SINGER? I never learned how to sing on-key as a child I think singing takes a lot of confidence, and I was shy, so I never tried it. I think too much and it prevents me from singing well.

3. Behavioral Perspective REWARDS and PUNISHMENTS cause our behavior. We seek REWARDS and AVOID punishment. SKIP AND LOTTO

GP- Behavioral Perspective WHY DOES TERESA EAT ROCKS?

Behavioral Perspective WHY AM I A HORRIBLE SINGER? Every time I sing, the awkward feeling I get and the weird looks people give me are a punishment that prevents me from wanting to practice my singing, so I never get better. I feel rewarded by the way people laugh at me when I sing horribly, so I keep singing horribly to make people laugh.

Behavioral Perspective This guy is always angry. Explain WHY this might be the case from the behavioral perspective.

4. Humanistic Perspective A desire to SUCCEED and be GOOD causes our behavior Will Smith

Humanistic Perspective WHY AM I A HORRIBLE DANCER? I think being a bad singer is FUNNY and I behave this way because it makes me feel like I’m SUCCESSFUL at being funny To me, being successful in life means I need to focus my energy on things other than singing, so I never saw being good at singing as part of success.

GP- Humanistic Perspective WHY DOES TERESA EAT ROCKS?

Humanistic Perspective This guy is always angry. Explain WHY this might be the case from the humanistic perspective.

5. Socio-Cultural Where we come from and how much money we have causes our behavior FARMER JOE AND CHAMILLIONAIRE

Socio-Cultural Perspective WHY AM I A HORRIBLE DANCER? Where I’m from, we never sing, so I didn’t ever practice. I don’t want to spend my money on singing lessons.

GP- Socio-Cultural Perspective WHY DOES TERESA EAT ROCKS?

Socio-Cultural Perspective This guy is always angry. Explain WHY this might be the case from the socio-cultural perspective.

6. Psychoanalytic Perspective Unconscious thoughts born from childhood events cause our behavior JIMBO AND JONI

Psychoanalytic Perspective WHY AM I A HORRIBLE DANCER? When I was a kid I was made fun of publicly for singing and every time I sing, I unconsciously associate with that feeling. When I was little, my role models always told me singing was dumb, so I unconsciously feel like people will reject me if I sing.

GP- Psychoanalytic Perspective WHY DOES TERESA EAT ROCKS?

Psychoanalytic Perspective This guy is always angry. Explain WHY this might be the case from the psychoanalytic perspective.

Group Practice 1.Ms. Knight is a teacher because her dad passed down “the teacher gene,” to her (heredity). 2.Isabel always does her HW because she gets rewarded with good grades and praise from her family. 3.My Dad doesn’t like going in the water because one time when he was young he almost drowned. He unconsciously associates water with that experience in his mind. 4.Brandi thinks about helping others at all times and thinks its an important part of life, which leads her to behave in generous ways.

IP - Practice 1.Students tucked their shirts in around Ms. Parker because if they didn’t, she would write them up or give them a suspension. 2.Ms. Knight feels anxiety when she’s around cows, so she avoids them. The cause of his behavior is an unconscious association of the cow to a time when a cow sneezed in her face when he was a child. 3.Rick Donlan killed 20 people because his brain was damaged in the area that controls aggression. 4.Lionel Messi plays soccer because he grew up in a culture that values playing the game. 5.Karina works hard in school because she wants to be successful and do good in life. 6.Ms. Knight bites her nails because of the way she thinks about how bad she is singing gives him anxiety.

Exit Ticket: This guy… GROUPS of 2: explain why this guy loves squashing bugs from each of the 6 different psychological perspectives. WRITE DOWN YOUR ANSWERS. I will be collecting your work for an assignment grade.
