Section 15-7

Organic compounds  Study of organic compounds which are compounds that contain C  C atom has 4 electrons in its outer ring, so it can form 4 bonds with 4 other elements  All living things contain organic compounds  About 95% of all known substances are organic compounds

Carbon atoms can form three different types of covalent bonds; a single bond, a double bond or a triple bond. This is why there are many different organic compounds.

A molecular model of an organic compound which shows the arrangement of atoms.

Section 15-8

All living things need organic compounds to stay alive. Most organisms get the organic compounds from the food they eat. Most food is made up of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins.

Organic compounds made up of C, H, and O. Sugars and starches are examples. They give the body its main source of energy. Foods like cereals, grains, vegetables, fruits, breads are good sources.

Organic compounds made up mostly of C and H. Fats and oils are lipids. They are a secondary source of energy for the body. Lipids can be stored by the body for a later use. Butter, meat, cheese, and nuts are good sources.

Cholesterol is a lipid. Animal fats contain high cholesterol. High cholesterol is harmful to the body. It forms fatty deposits on the walls of blood vessels, which can restrict blood flow.

Organic compounds that are used to build and repair the body. The building blocks of proteins are amino acids which contain C, H, O, and N. Milk, fish, eggs, and beans are good sources.
