INTRODUCTION The Dutch began to colonize Indonesia in the early 17th century; the islands were occupied by Japan from 1942 to Indonesia declared their independence after Japan’s surrender.

Indonesian Facts Indonesia is on the continent [or next] to Asia. Indonesia has over 18,000 islands. It has over 200 active volcanoes. It is also the largest archipelago[a large chain of islands] on Earth. Indonesia spans almost 2 million square kilometers between Asia and Australia.
MORE FACTS Many of the islands are uninhabited. Sumatra and Sulawesi are home to most of the population of Indonesia. In Indonesia the mountains are called Barisan, Kapaas and the Maoke. The capital is Jakarta.
