Austin Warren 6A

Fred Gipson  Fred Gipson is an author. He is best known for writing his 1956 novel Old Yeller. Gipson was born in Mason on the Texas hill country. The son of Beck Gipson and former Emma Dieshler. After working a variety of farming and ranching jobs he enrolled at the University of Texas in Austin.

Setting  The setting takes place in the Salt Licks.  Also the setting takes place ins the late 1860’

Characters  Old yeller is a dog who helps a family survive.  Travis is a boy who finds a dog and wants him gone.  Little Arliss is a boy who also finds the dog and wants to keep it.  Papa is a man who has to go to Abilene Kansas to get money.  Mama is a woman who tries to keep the boys out of trouble.

Author’s Purpose  I think that the author wrote this story to entertain.

Sequence  Papa has to go to Abilene Kansas.  Travis finds a dog and don’t want it.  Little Arliss wants to keep it.  Mama wants him to keep it.  Bud Searcy tells them that they have Burn Sanderson’s dog.  Burn Sanderson comes and wants the dog back.  Little Arliss throws rocks at him.  He makes a deal with Little Arliss.

 Mama cooks Burn Sanderson a big dinner.  Burn Sanderson tells them that hydrophobia is spreading.  The roan bulls fight.  Rose gets hydrophobia.  Travis shoots rose.  Old yeller gets hydrophobia.  Travis has to take a risk to shoot old yeller.

Compare and Contrast  I’m comparing and contrasting Travis and Little Arliss.  Contrast-Travis is 14 and Little Arliss is a 6 year old. Compare- They are both boys.

Theme  The theme of this story is don’t waste your good life worrying about the bad.

Summary  This story is about a boy that finds a dog and don’t want it. Through manhood he discovers that he likes the dog. A roan bull gets hydrophobia and the dog gets in a fight with a loafer wolf and catches hydrophobia. the family has to take the risk of shooting the dog.
