Harriet Beecher Stowe

She wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin in an effort to gain support for the abolitionist movement.

Frederick Douglass

He edited The North Star in 1845 as an abolitionist.

William Lloyd Garrison

He wrote The Liberator in 1831 in support of the abolitionist movement.

John Brown

This man intended to arm slaves and start a rebellion at Harper’s Ferry.

What was Harper’s Ferry?

John Brown hated slavery. Led a group of people to take a military arsenal. He wanted to give weapons to slaves so they could revolt. The rebellion was unsuccessful and John Brown was hanged – Southerners were enraged by Northerners reactions to his death

What is the importance of Fort Sumter?

First shot fired in the Civil War. April 12, 1961

 Dred Scott v. Sandford

 Dred Scott sued for his freedom.  The Supreme Court ruled:  Slaves are property  No African American can be a citizen  The Missouri Compromise of 1820 is unconstitutional

The Fugitive Slave Act

A law that authorized the arrest of escaped slaves in states where slavery was illegal. It made it illegal to help runaway slaves and no fugitive had a right to a jury trial.

Compromise of 1850

To please the North: California would be admitted as a free state. The slave trade would be abolished in Washington D.C. To please the South: New Mexico and Utah Territories would be able to decide the issue of slavery by a majority vote. (popular sovereignty)

Missouri Compromise

Missouri was admitted to the Union as a slave state and Maine was admitted as a free state. It also created the line, that is later ruled unconstitutional.

Kansas-Nebraska Act

Repealed the Missouri Compromise. Allowed the Kansas and Nebraska territories to decide slavery by popular sovereignty.

This book, written by Harriet Beecher Stowe, is contributed to leading to the Civil War.
