KS2 end of Year 6 Tests 2016 Information evening New curriculum

Main changes to the curriculum Numeracy – Emphasis on methods- In long multiplication Long division (on sample test papers) – Inclusion of ‘circles’ circumference, diameter Literacy – SPAG – Changes to terminology (time connectives are now called adverbials of time) – Children to identify complex grammatical features (subjunctive mood e.g. If I were a rich man- expressing a condition which is doubtful ) (embedded clauses are now called relative clauses) – Increase in depth of understanding – Emphasis on spelling - You may have already noticed the 6 national curriculum spellings on some spelling homework sheets

Teacher assessment Emerging- ( a starting point) secure with some expectations Developing-secure with most expectations Expected- achieving all expectations Exceeding- working at a greater depth, understanding, knowledge and skills These are teacher assessments taken throughout the year. It is measured according to end of year expectations ( on the website).

ENGLISH SPAG TEST ( spelling, punctuation and grammar) PAPER1 short answer questions –grammar and punctuation - 45 minutes PAPER 2 spelling –20 spellings- 15 minutes

MATHEMATICS PAPER 1 ARITHMETIC- 30 MINUTES –No mental maths, mechanical methods are tested NB. New government emphasis on multiplication and division facts and number bonds. PAPER 2 REASONING- 40 MINUTES PAPER 3 REASONING- 40 MINUTES –Application of all concepts and methods learnt

Tests - Raw and Scaled Scores After testing is completed, the Government will determine what the national average raw (actual) score is. This will equate to a scaled score of 100. Children who score 100 will be said to have met the expected standard for a Year 6 child. Children who score less than 100 will be ‘working below’ the national standard. Children whose score is higher than 100 will be said to be ‘working in greater depth’.

Return of Test Results Tuesday 5 th July Your child will receive: –A raw score (number of raw marks awarded) –A scaled score –Confirmation of whether or not they attained the national standard Due to the fact that scaled scores and levels aren’t equivalent it is not possible to make comparisons with results in previous years.

Writing Assessment As in previous years writing is not assessed externally. Writing is assessed and moderated within the school by teachers and coordinators, and also with other schools. This is in line with the school’s assessment without levels procedure.

Science Sampling Monday 6 th June to Friday 17 th June Not all children in Year 6 will take science tests. However, a number of schools will be required to take part in science sampling: a test administered to a selected sample of children thought to be representative of the population as a whole. (Monday 6 to Friday 17 June is the science sampling test period in which your child might sit the tests.) For those who are selected, there will be three papers:

Science Sampling Biology: 25 minutes, 22 marks Chemistry: 25 minutes, 22 marks Physics: 25 minutes, 22 marks It sounds very intimidating, but these are ‘questions in a physics/chemistry/biology context’, for example: Biology: ‘Describe the differences in the life cycle of an amphibian and a mammal’ Chemistry: ‘Group a list of materials according to whether they are solid, liquid or gas’ Physics: ‘Predict whether two magnets will attract or repel each other, based on where the poles are facing’

How to help your child Please don't use the few new sample papers that are available online as the content will constitute our mock examinations in school (25 th – 29 th April) We will be using previous SAT papers at times to practice and as homework as we have done in the past but there will also be a mixture of other ‘sheets/ booklets on certain concepts/ areas of learning as and when they become available NB –A lot of the content on the old style SAT papers is still relevant and useful preparation
