How to solve ? Mean & mode problems

Definition of mean & mode Mean: The "mean" is where you add up all the numbers and then divide by the number of numbers. Mode: The "mode" is the value that occurs most often. If no number is repeated, then there is no mode for the list.

Step by step mean Example below of mean: Problem: The mean of 29 test scores is 77.8. What is the sum of these test scores? Solution: To find the mean of n numbers, we divide the sum of the n numbers by n.    If we let n = 29, we can work backwards to find the sum of these test scores.    Multiplying the mean by the 29 we get:   77.8 x 29 = 2,256.2 Answer:  The sum of these test scores is 2,256.2

Step by step mode Example below of mode: Problem:  The number of points scored in a series of football games is listed below. Which score occurred most often?  7,  13,  18,  24,  9,  3,  18 Solution:  Ordering the scores from least to greatest, we get:  3,  7,  9,  13,  18,  18,  24 Answer:  The score which occurs most often is 18.

Understanding more The mean is the arithmetic average, the average you are probably used to finding for a set of numbers - add up the numbers and divide by how many there are: (80 + 90 + 90 + 100 + 85 + 90) / 6 = 89 1/6. The mode is the value that occurs most often. In this case, since there are 3 90's, the mode is 90. A set of data can have more than one mode.

Try it yourself! 1) 18, 18, 15, 18, 18, 24, 21, 21, 24, 14 mean = median = mode = 2) 94, 69, 84, 69, 90, 75, 94, 90, 90, 9, 5 3) 4, 18, 18, 23, 23, 19, 8, 8, 8, 8, 28 4) 12, 15, 16, 17, 15, 17, 17, 17, 18, 17
