Summer palace

Introduction  Situated in the Haidian District northwest of Beijing, Summer Palace is 9 miles from central Beijing. Being the largest and most well-preserved royal park in China, it greatly influences Chinese horticulture and landscape with its famous natural views and cultural interests, which also has long been recognized as“the Museum of royal gardens”.

History  Pre-Qing dynasty The origins of the Summer Palace date back to the Jin dynasty in 1153, when the fourth ruler, Wanyan Liang who is a prince in charge of Hailing, moved the Jin capital from Huining Prefecture to Yanjing. He ordered the construction of a palace in the Fragrant Hills and Jade Spring Hill located in the northwest of Beijing.  Qing dynasty  In the early Qing dynasty, Jar Hill served as a stable for horses in the imperial palace. Eunuchs who committed offences were sent there to weed and cut grass. In the beginning of the reign of the Qianlong Emperor, many imperial gardens were built in the area around present-day Beijing's Haidian District so the rate of water consumption increased tremendously. Around the time, much of the water stored in the Western Lake came from the freshwater spring on Jade Spring Hill while a fraction was from the Wanquan River.

 History Post-Qing dynasty In 1912, following the abdication of Puyi, who the Last Emperor in the Chinese history. the Summer Palace became the private property of the former imperial family of the Qing Empire. Two years later, the Summer Palace was opened to the public and entry tickets were sold. In 1924, after Puyi was expelled from the Forbidden City by the warlord Feng Yuxiang, the Beijing government took charge of administrating the Summer Palace and turned it into a public park.

Attractions  Summer palace radiates fully the natural beauty and the grandeur of royal gardens. Composed mainly of Longevity Hill and Kunming Lake, it occupies an area of acres. There are over 3,000 man-made ancient structures which count building space of more than 70,000 square meters, including pavilions, towers, bridges, corridors, etc. It can be divided into four parts: the Court Area, Front Hill Area, Rear Hill Area and Lake Area.
