8 th Grade American History Teacher: Carlos Leiva School: Westwood Middle

 In June 2012, a group of Polk County History teachers boarded a tour bus and headed for Charleston, South Carolina for a week of historic fun and learning collaboratively as a group. The mission was to experience historic Charleston and visit the Charleston museum. There, we toured the museum with the museum curators and the rest of the itinerary with tour guides. The History teachers learned and experienced many new things to bring back to the classroom.

 This permanent exhibition provides a rich overview of events in and around Charleston from secession to Including the Federal naval blockade, Union bombardment, social dislocations, privations and five major Union attempts to capture the “Queen City of the South,” the war and its effects changed the lives of Charleston’s residents forever. Their story—one of suffering, sacrifice, initiative and tenacity—is told with extensive images and artifacts from the Museum’s collections.

 The Charleston Museum presents Blasted: Assorted Projectiles and Explosives of the Civil War. This original exhibition explores the varied and sometimes revolutionary artillery shells and small arms projectiles that were used during this country’s defining conflict. Artifacts on exhibit include a rare Quinlivan shot designed to penetrate Federal ironclads and a two-chambered incendiary shell likely intended for use in Charleston’s defense.

 Perceive past events and issues as they were experienced by people at the time, to develop historical empathy as opposed to present-mindedness.

 View historic events through the eyes of those who were there as shown in their art, writings, music, and artifacts.
