What are the Global Goals? The Global Goals are the successor to the Millennium Development Goals. They are the core of the “Agenda for Sustainable Development by 2030”. Some of the other Goals and targets are supported by access to WASH Goal 1: End poverty in all its forms everywhere. Goal 2: End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture. Goal 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all at all ages. A proposal for a global indicator framework will be presented to the Statistical Commission in March The global monitoring framework will include national, regional, global and thematic indicators. Monitoring and accountability At a national level: new national forums to be created - aligning national development agenda with regional and global goals. At a regional level: regional forums like SAARC and the annual meeting of the African Union. At a global level: the High Level Political Forum (HLPF). Thematic: thematic modelling and reporting will cover specialist areas and indicators. The Global Goals WaterAid is a registered charity: Australia: ABN Canada: RR0001. Sweden: Org.nr: , PG: , BG: UK: (England and Wales) and SC (Scotland). US: WaterAid America is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization

5 reasons to be excited 1.Resourcing – the goals will encourage governments to hold discussions on what resources are needed to domesticate the goals. 1.Priorities – governments will prioritise certain goals within national strategies and this is an opportunity to make the case for WASH. 1.Accountability – what we measure, we treasure! For example, calling for a universal baseline on WASH in schools. This will now have to be reported on regularly. 1.Financing – opportunity to influence discussions on planning systems, budgeting, donor financing from large donors, foundations and corporates. 1.Tackling inequality – “no one left behind” is a critical mantra of the framework and is expected to be applied in all monitoring and reporting. The Global Goals WaterAid is a registered charity: Australia: ABN Canada: RR0001. Sweden: Org.nr: , PG: , BG: UK: (England and Wales) and SC (Scotland). US: WaterAid America is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization
