Operation Identification

What is Operation Identification?  Operation Identification (OP ID) is a nationwide effort of law enforcement agencies and the citizens and businesses they serve. The goal is to reduce property theft through an identification system.

How Can I Participate?  Engrave or mark your valuables with your Driver's License Number. Example: Number and State Abbreviation. Be sure to mark all items of value and be complete in your inventory.

What Items Should I Engrave?  The best rule of thumb is to mark and record anything of value that a burglar (or two) could cart away. Here are just a few examples

Things To Engrave  Bicycles Power tools Binoculars Recreation equipment Cameras Televisions Computers CD/DVD players VCRs Hand tools Stereo systems Video game equipment Electronics Camcorders Appliances Business machines

MAKE SHURE YOU DO YOUR JEWELRY ALSO  Small or very valuable items such as jewelry or antiques can either be engraved by a jeweler or photographed for identification purposes.

WHERE TO GET AN ENGRAVER  Engraving tools are available at hardware, department or variety stores at affordable prices.

DO NOT DISPLAY OPERATION ID STICKER WITHOUT FIRST ENGRAVING YOUR PROPERTY. ALL VALUABLE PROPERTY ON THESE PREMISES ARE MARKED FOR QUICK AND ACCURATE IDENTIFICATION

DISPLAY YOUR OPERATION I.D. PLACARD  Once you’ve marked your property, place an OPERATION I.D. placard near every entrance of your home. The placard may be obtained below.

PROGRAM ENHANCEMENT  You should also record other important items which are vulnerable to theft. Specifically, you should record credit card information and other documents which are not replaceable without additional means of identification.

KEEP AN INVENTORY OF ENGRAVED ITEMS  List your engraved items and include their make, model, size, color, and serial number, if applicable. Record the exact spots where you engraved your identification number on each item. Keep a copy at home and in a secure place such as a safety deposit box.
