Using Family Search for Finding Names for Your Family By Elder Richard O. Boen Layton Valley View Family History Center Layton, Utah

Start by logging on in Family Tree.

Once you have logged in, go to Family Tree

It should look like this:

If you have not entered any information on anyone in your tree, take the time to enter the names of your ancestors. Once you are ready to start, go to someone who has passed away and click on the person’s name.

Here is Ole Johnson Boen. Click on “Person.”

It should look like this.

Do you see where it says SEARCH RECORDS? Click on Search Records – this is what it looks like.

Notice your person’s name is at the top with family and wife.

Here are census, birth and marriages records for you to look at and see if these are your family members.

Let’s look at the first name and census for Ole in 1940.

Click on the blue Ole J Boen. It should look like this:

This census lists all the family members starting with the head of family Ole J Boen This census provides a lot of information: age, gender and where the family was born and lived. If you click on any of the family members, you can change the page to reflect that person, place and their estimated birth year. For example: Click on Inga Boen, 4 th name from the top.

See how the page brings up Inga Boen

Now you can add Inga to your records and enter the information into your personal file for this person for support of this person and family. Family Search helps you find names that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has found in records and digitized for everyone’s convenience. Remember that all names may not be in this Family Tree for your research.

Don’t be alarmed if you don’ see your family. The most important thing to remember is not to get frustrated on one name. There are other family names in your tree, and you can come back to work on them later.

Overview 1.Log into your family tree. If you don’t have an account, create one. 2.Go to Family Tree and sign in. 3.If you have names in your tree, start your search to add other family members who have passed away. If you don’t have family names in your tree, enter the information into your tree. Get the information by asking your mom and dad or other family members. 4.Remember that your tree cannot connect to other trees if they are living!! You can only connect names for those that are DEAD. 5.Once you have opened your tree, pick anyone you want to work on. Click on that person’s name and a box appears. Click on person and the person’s file will open.

“Frustrated” “Good Job Elders and Sisters” 6.Add any information to that person that you know or click on “search records.” 7.If you clicked on “search records,” you are now in Family Search. They involve records the Church posted in its website. There are 4 billion names in this website: census, marriages, births and deaths. 8.Once you find records, you can add them to your file. 9.Practice on finding names and what are you not supposed to get??
