 5 year olds can talk about the job they want when they grow up?  year olds have already begun to narrow down the number of occupations they are prepared to consider in the future?

 Ministerial Council for Employment, Education, Training and Youth Affairs, (MCEETYA) defines vocational learning as general learning that has a vocational perspective. It includes elements such as  general employability skills,  enterprise education,  career education and  community and work based learning.

 students from preschool to Year 12 have the capacity to understand career development? (Miles Morgan Australia (2003). Australian Blueprint for Career Development: Draft prototype, P. 87.)  These research findings suggest we are missing a valuable opportunity to influence and enhance the career development of our students if we do not begin career education early.

 Traditionally in HCC Schools Careers Education is conducted in Years 9 or 10.  HCC schools are leading the way with Careers Education starting in Primary School.  REAL GAME SERIES

SCHOOL TO WORK: LOOKING FORWARD A Developmental Model

 This is an initiative that the Vocational Team is promoting in schools  Whole school approach to Careers – Not just the Careers Adviser!  Teachers being trained as MENTORS to help guide students  School to Work Plans OR Personal Learning Plans

 Employability skills are those “skills required not only to gain employment, but also to progress within an enterprise so as to achieve one’s potential and contribute successfully to enterprise strategic directions” (ACCI and BCA, 2001).  Employability skills are generic skills and attributes that can be transferred from one situation to another.

communication skills The ability to express and understand information team work skills The ability to work with others to get things done;

problem-solving skills the ability to identify problems and develop solutions initiative and enterprise Skills: the ability to seek And take advantage of opportunities

learning skills: the ability to achieve new skills and/ Or knowledge Technology skills the ability to use appropriate technologies to complete tasks

 planning and organising skills the ability to coordinate and prioritise tasks and resources.  self-management skills the ability to take responsibility for setting and achieving personal goals

 There is no doubt that enterprises see the inclusion of these attributes as a new and essential component of employability skills. ONE MORE SKILL  Cross-cultural understanding the ability to respect diversity and act without discrimination

 loyalty  commitment  honesty and integrity  enthusiasm  reliability  personal presentation  commonsense  positive self-esteem  sense of humour  balanced attitude to work and home life  ability to deal with pressure  motivation  adaptability

 There are many “things” you can do.  Talk to your child about work..any kind of work; paid or unpaid; about anyone you see working or doing a job.  Keep the conversation going!  

 Developed in Canada  Series of six career and life education programs – all competency based.  The main goal of all games is to increase the mastery of personal management Learning and work exploration and career Building  High Five Principles linked through all games - simulations

The High Five Principles are:  Change is Constant  Learning is Ongoing  Focus on the Journey  Follow Your Heart  Access Your Allies. The High Five have proven to have a universal quality and to resonate with people from all walks of life.

 These are courses/ subjects that students can choose in stage 6 and now also in stage 5 (year 9/10).  ICF – Industry Curriculum Framework (TAFE school!)  optional HSC exams  Compulsory Work Placement  Competency based assessments –  no marks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 VET refers to appropriately accredited and industry ‐ specific training programs that deliver competencies endorsed within the National Training Framework and certification of industry accredited training aligned to the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).
