THE BERLIN WALL

What tensions existed before the Berlin Wall was built? EISENHOWERKHRUSHCHEV

TENSIONS The Potsdam Agreement divided Germany into four zones as well as Berlin.

TENSIONS Having launched the world's first ever satellite(1957), Khrushchev felt confident about Soviet power and chose to test such power in Berlin.

TENSIONS Eisenhower showed a willingness to make concessions on the future of Berlin. Because of the U-2 spy plane incident (1960), the meeting to discuss the future of Berlin was cancelled.

TENSIONS When Kennedy comes into power(1961) he is in no mood for negotiating and instead orders a massive increase in the armed services.

TENSIONS East Berlin was losing far too many citizens each year. They were especially concerned with the number of educated refugees fleeing the country.

TENSIONS Spies were sent from West Berlin to the East.

13 th August 1961: the Berlin Wall is built
