Parts Wii Console Wii Wireless Controller Wii Nunchuk Wii Sensor Bar

Wii Console Specs Console size: 8.5” x 6” x 2” Optical Disc Drive supports single and dual-layer Wii discs as well as GameCube discs. Maximum read speed is six times faster than a DVD drive. Wii console can be connected to the internet using a USB 2.0 LAN adaptor or a wireless IEEE 802.11 connection.

Wii Controller/Nunchuk Controller is battery powered Functions as a remote. Includes Direct Pointing Device with a three-axis accelerometer Indicator LEDs Rumble The Nunchuk extension is the first of many planned.

Wii Sensor Bar Mounted to television/monitor Configured to widescreen/full screen Unlike original Nintendo gun sensor (Colors) LED sensors and infrared sensors

Gyroscope A device consisting of a spinning mass, typically a disk or wheel, mounted on a base so that its axis can turn freely in one or more directions and thereby maintain its orientation regardless of any movement of the base.

Gyroscope

Gyroscopes The gyroscope is spinning on its axis. A force is applied to try to rotate the spin axis. The gyroscope is reacting to the input force along an axis perpendicular to the input force

Precession The act of changing the axis of rotation by applying a force to the axis. Newton’s First Law of Motion states that a body in motion continues to move at a constant speed along a straight line unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. The top point on the gyroscope is acted on by the force applied to the axle and begins to move toward the left. It continues trying to move leftward because of Newton's first law of motion, but the gyro's spinning rotates it.

Wii Remote Accelerometers Measures forces on gyroscope Thinner than a penny Can Fit twelve on a Postage stamp Can Accurately measure forces more than three times the pull of gravity in three different directions. Extremely cheap ($6.00 each)

WiiMote Mechanics Controller movement results in an input force on the gyroscope (within the remote) Gyroscope relays signal to accelerometers Accelerometers measure and translate signal into direction Direction interpreted by console

Gyroscope Applications Space shuttle navigation Airplane navigation (autopilot) Hubble space telescope Flywheels Yo-Yo Frisbees Nintendo Wii Remote!
