VMG Spelling Challenge

Your mission: collect as many tricky spellings as possible from your exercise books. This could be words that you have misspelled in a lesson, or in homework, or just words that you find very tricky! When you find that you have spelled a word incorrectly, jot it down in your planner and in the space in your exercise book. Bring the list of tricky spellings to your VMG literacy Spelling Programme session.

Now for the challenge part: Partner up with someone from your VMG. Share a word from your tricky spellings list with each other – this means discussing what might make a particular word tricky, and how you might make it easier to remember in future. E.g. the word ‘remember’ is tricky for some people. This is possibly because it has lots of ‘m’ sounds. Or possibly because we mix it up with memorable.

remember … How can we remember it correctly? Maybe remember a saying that contains the spelling of it, e.g. I am a member of the remember club? Can you think of better ones? Or you could write/rewrite/rewrite it until your hand gets used to the feeling and your eyes get used to the shape of it. Or we could use our inner voices to say it like it looks, emphasising the MEM sound to remind us that we should include it in the middle. Or you could use the look/discuss/cover/write/check process.

Move onto your next words!

Once you have discussed the words and come up with ways to remember their spellings, put your planners/notes aside. You are ready for The Test!

Write 1-5 down your white board Your partner tests you by reading out 5 of your tricky words, and you write them on a white board. You do the same to them! Swap and mark each other’s spellings, then give your results to your VMG tutor.

This week’s subject spellings are from Modern Foreign Languages RHYTHM (Rhythm Has Your Two Hips Moving) PERFORMANCE COMPOSITION DYNAMICS UKULELE Use some of your earlier spelling tricks to learn how to spell these.
