Common Overuse Injuries of the Knee in Runners Colin Rhoads IT 2010 November 4, 2012

Agenda This presentation will examine some common overuse injuries in the knee from running and how to prevent them. We will discuss Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS) and Patellar Tendonitis.

Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS) Cause/Prevention ITBS is a common running injury that causes lateral knee pain. It is brought on by repetitive friction of the ITB on the lateral femoral condyle. Common causes: weak glute muscles, weak hips, leg length discrepancy. Prevention: proper strengthening exercises, stretching, proper running form. Picture Credit: injuries/iliotibial-band-syndrome/

Patellar Tendonitis: Cause/Prevention Patellar Tendonitis is a common running injury that causes anterior knee pain in and around the patella tendon. It is brought on by friction between the patella tendon and the sesmoid bone. Common causes: muscular imbalances, overuse, poor flexibility in the quadriceps and hamstrings. Prevention: Proper stretching and strengthening exercises. Photo Credit: chiropractic-patellar-tendinitis.htm

Prevention A good way to incorporate proper strengthening and stretching exercises is to perform some lunges and body squats before you run. Focus on form while running. Make sure you are not over striding and stand up straight.

Conclusion This presentation has examined two overuse injuries in the knee caused by running. ITBS and Patellar Tendonitis: Painful overuse injuries in the knee caused by running. Can be prevented with proper form, strengthening exercises, and stretching.
