God The Son, The Executor of the Plan His Resurrection

A.Resurrection in the Old Testament The doctrine appears as early as the time of Job, probably a contemporary of Abraham, and is expressed in his statement of faith in Job 19:25-27 That all men will ultimately be raised is taught in John 5:28-29 Revelation 20:4-6 Revelation 20:12-13 Job 14:13-15 Psalm 17:15 Psalm 49:15 Isaiah 26:19 Daniel 12:2 Hosea 13:14 Hebrews 11:17-19

His Resurrection A.Resurrection in the Old Testament The resurrection of Christ is specifically taught in P salm 16:9-10, where the psalmist David declared, The resurrection of Christ is also indicated in Psalm 22:22, where following His death Christ declares He will declare His name unto His “brethren.” In P salm 118:22-24 the elevation of Christ to become the headstone of the corner is defined in A cts 4:10-11 as signifying the resurrection of Christ. Acts 2:24-31 Acts 13:34-37

His Resurrection A.Resurrection in the Old Testament The resurrection of Christ seems also to be anticipated in the typology of the Old Testament in the priesthood of Melchizedek. Genesis 14:18 Hebrews 7:15-17 Hebrews 7:23-25

A.Resurrection in the Old Testament The typology of the two birds where the living bird is released, Leviticus 14:4-7 the feast of firstfruits indicating Christ is the firstfruits of the harvest of resurrection, Leviticus 23:10-11 and Aaron’s rod that budded speak of resurrection. Numbers 17:8

B.Christ’s Prediction of His Own Resurrection Matthew 16:21 Matthew 17:23 Matthew 20:17-19 Matthew 26:12 Matthew 26:28-29 Matthew 26:31-32 Mark 9:30-32 Luke 9:22 Luke 18:31-34 John 2:19-22 John 10:17-18

His Resurrection C.Proofs of the Resurrection of Christ At least seventeen appearances of Christ occurred after His resurrection. 1.Appearance to Mary Magdalene. John 20:11-17 Mark 16: Appearance to the women. Matthew 28: Appearance to Peter. Luke 24:34 1 Corinthians 15:5

His Resurrection C.Proofs of the Resurrection of Christ 4.Appearance of Christ to the disciples on the road to Emmaus. Mark 16:12-13 Luke 24: Appearance of Christ to the ten disciples, referred to collectively as “the eleven” as Thomas was absent. Mark 16:14 Luke 24:36-43 John 20:19-24

His Resurrection The tomb was empty after His resurrection. Matthew 28:6 Mark 16:6 Luke 24:3 Luke 24:6 Luke 24:12 John 20:2 John 20:5-8

His Resurrection It is evident that the witnesses to the resurrection of Christ were not gullible, easily deceived people. John 20:9-15 John 20:25 It is also evident that there was a great change in the disciples after the resurrection. Their sorrow was replaced with joy and faith.

His Resurrection The Book of Acts testifies to –the divine power of the Holy Spirit in the disciples after the resurrection of Christ, –the power of the Gospel which they proclaimed, –and the supporting evidence of miracles. The day of Pentecost is another important proof, as it would have been impossible to have convinced three thousand people of the resurrection of Christ who had opportunity to examine the evidence if it were merely a fiction.

His Resurrection The custom of the early church to observe the first day of the week, the time to celebrate the Lord’s Supper and bring their offering, is another historic evidence. Acts 20:7 1 Corinthians 16:2

His Resurrection D. Reasons for the Resurrection of Christ 1.Christ arose because of who He is. Acts 2:24 2.Christ arose to fulfill the Davidic covenant. 2 Samuel 7:12-16Psalm 89:20-37 Isaiah 9:6-7Luke 1:31-33 Acts 2:25-31

His Resurrection D. Reasons for the Resurrection of Christ 3.Christ arose to be the giver of resurrection life. 4.Christ arose that He might become the source of resurrection power. Matthew 28:18 Ephesians 1:19-21 Philippians 4:13 John 10:10-11 John 11:25-26 Ephesians 2:6 Colossians 3:1-4 1 John 5:11-12

His Resurrection D. Reasons for the Resurrection of Christ 5.Christ arose to be head over the church. Ephesians 1: Christ arose because our justification had been accomplished. Romans 4:25 7.Christ arose to be firstfruits of resurrection. 1 Corinthians 15:20-23

His Resurrection E. The Significance of the Resurrection of Christ The resurrection of Christ because of its historical character constitutes the most important proof for the deity of Jesus Christ. Because it was a great victory over sin and death, it also is the present standard of divine power as stated in E phesians 1:19-21.

His Resurrection E. The Significance of the Resurrection of Christ The resurrection is, therefore, the cornerstone of our Christian faith, and as Paul expressed it in 1 Corinthians 15:17 Because Christ is raised, our Christian faith is sure, the ultimate victory of Christ is certain, and our Christian faith is completely justified.

1.Does the Bible teach that all men who die will be resurrected? Yes 2.Summarize the Old Testament teaching on the resurrection of the human body. The doctrine of the resurrection appears as early as Job. Many Old Testament prophecies anticipate the resurrection of the human body. 3.To what extent does the Old Testament anticipate the resurrection of Jesus Christ? David wrote of Christ’s resurrection in several Psalms. In the typology of Melchizedek, the two birds, the first fruits of the harvest and Aaron’s rod we find the resurrection of Christ.

4.To what extent did Christ predict His own resurrection? Christ predicted His own resurrection in all several time in all four of the gospels. 5.How many appearances of Christ occurred between His resurrection and ascension? At least seventeen appearances. 6.Why are the many appearances of Christ and the circumstances surrounding them a strong confirmation of the fact of His resurrection? They constitute eyewitness historical confirmation. All of those to whom He appeared could not have could not have made such a story up and then been in agreement down to the last eye witness.

7.What support do the empty tomb, the character of the witnesses of His resurrection, and the extent of their convictions contribute to the doctrine of His resurrection? The disciples of Jesus had not believed he would rise from the dead. The empty tomb convinced them, and gave them the boldness to be willing to die for their faith in Christ. 8.What changes took place in the disciples after the resurrection of Christ, and how were they used as witnesses of the resurrection? Their sorrow was replaced with joy and faith. The power of the Holy Spirit became evident in their lives giving them the power to proclaim the gospel with boldness and giving them the power to perform miracles.

9.What evidence may be found in the day of Pentecost for the resurrection of Christ? The day of Pentecost made it possible to convince three thousand people of the resurrection of Christ who had opportunity to examine the evidence if it were merely a fiction. 10.How do the custom of the early church to observe the first day of the week and the continued existence of the early church in spite of persecution support the doctrine of resurrection? The very fact that the early church came into existence in spite of persecution and death of the apostles is left without adequate explanation if Christ did not rise from the dead. It was a literal and bodily resurrection which rendered the body of Christ suitable for its heavenly function.

11.Name at least seven reasons why Christ rose from the dead. Christ arose because of who He is. Christ arose to fulfill the Davidic covenant. Christ arose to be the giver of resurrection life. Christ arose that He might become the source of resurrection power. Christ arose to be head over the church. Christ arose because our justification had been accomplished. Christ arose to be firstfruits of resurrection.

12.Why is the resurrection of Christ important to Christian faith? The resurrection is the cornerstone of our Christian faith. Because Christ is raised, our Christian faith is sure, the ultimate victory of Christ is certain, and our Christian faith is completely justified. 13.How is the resurrection of Christ related to the present standard of divine power? Because it was a great victory over sin and death.
