Presentation transcript:

Students can be taught to use a range of comprehension strategies so that these strategies influence how they make meaning from a text. We will begin soon. Please read while you wait.

There are multiple ways to help students improve their comprehending abilities. Some of these way are less explicit; others more explicit. Teachers must be prepared to switch to more direct, explicit models of instruction if that is what any particular student needs. We will begin soon. Please read while you wait.

Holding tight to only one methodology not only limits what a teacher can do but limits who can be successful. We will begin soon. Please read while you wait.

… some students will also need and benefit from direct vocabulary study. While we recognize that most words are not learned via direct instruction, but in a more indirect manner… we know that vocabulary knowledge affects comprehension. We will begin soon. Please read while you wait.

Methods that encourage students to actively construct meanings help students learn and retain word meanings longer. We will begin soon. Please read while you wait.

Some readers struggle through a text because they lack fluent word recognition. … Strong word recognition skills are a major component of comprehending a text; however, they alone don’t ensure comprehension. We will begin soon. Please read while you wait.

 Teachers who encourage a wide range of reading… We will begin soon. Please read while you wait.

 … who give their students plenty of opportunity for sustained, silent reading, We will begin soon. Please read while you wait.

 … who read aloud to their students on a regular basis, We will begin soon. Please read while you wait.

 …. who provide ongoing opportunities for students to discuss… their understanding of a text, We will begin soon. Please read while you wait.

 …who encourage extensive rather than intensive reading, We will begin soon. Please read while you wait.

 …who encourage self-selection of some texts, We will begin soon. Please read while you wait.

 …and who recognize that students become better readers by reading, not merely practicing reading skills: We will begin soon. Please read while you wait.

 …and who recognize that students become better readers by reading, not merely practicing reading skills: increase students’ opportunity for developing a positive attitude toward reading, for improving fluency, for improving vocabulary, and for improving comprehension. We will begin soon. Please read while you wait.

Reading is a social process, an interactive activity, one in which readers create meaning through transactions – interactions – with the text, their prior knowledge, the context, and other readers. We will begin soon. Please read while you wait.
