Gal 1:6-7 (ESV) I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7 not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. What was Paul’s reason for writing this epistle to the Christians in Galatia?

Gal 1:6-7 (ESV) I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7 not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. What was Paul’s reason for writing this epistle to the Christians in Galatia? How were the Judaizers able to superimpose their legalism on the Galatian Christians over the Gospel they received from Paul?

In Galatians 1-2, Paul defended: A) his divine appointment to the apostleship B) the Gospel that he taught.

In Galatians 1-2, Paul defended: A) his divine appointment to the apostleship B) the Gospel that he taught. In Galatians 3-4, Paul explains to the Galatians that the Old Testament itself teaches that we are justified by faith and not by the Law of Moses.

Faith, Not Law: The Means of Our Justification Galatians 3:1-14

Gal 3:1-3 (ESV) O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. 2 Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? *

Gal 3:4-6 (ESV) Did you suffer so many things in vain— if indeed it was in vain? 5 Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith— 6 just as Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”? *

Gal 3:7-9 (ESV) Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. 8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.” 9 So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith. *

Gal 3:10-12 (ESV) For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” 11 Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.” 12 But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.” *

Gal 3:13-14 (ESV) Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— 14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith. *

Gal 4:6-7 (ESV) And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God. The message of this particular lesson is that we are justified by faith because we have received the Holy Spirit by faith. What does “justified” mean?

Gal 4:6-7 (ESV) And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God. The message of this particular lesson is that we are justified by faith because we have received the Holy Spirit by faith. What does “justified” mean? declared or made righteous in the sight of God - google.com shown to be right by providing proof - vocabulary.com

Acts 10:44-48 (ESV) While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word. 45 And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles. 46 For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared, 47 “Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to remain for some days. Were Cornelius, his family, and his close friends justified? How did Peter and the circumcised believers know?

2 Thess 1:5-8 (ESV) This is evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be considered worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are also suffering— 6 since indeed God considers it just to repay with affliction those who afflict you, 7 and to grant relief to you who are afflicted as well as to us, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels 8 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. Can we have salvation without “obeying the Gospel”?

Rom 6:1-4 (ESV) What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. How do we “obey the Gospel”?

Acts 2:37-39 (ESV) Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” How do we “obey the Gospel”?

Gal 2:19-21 (ESV) For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21 I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose. If we could be justified by our own power through keeping the law, then why did Jesus die on the cross?

Gal 2:19-21 (ESV) For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. 21 I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose. If we could be justified by our own power through keeping the law, then why did Jesus die on the cross? If Christ had to die to save us, could we have been saved by the Law of Moses which had been around for1500 years?

Gal 3:1 (ESV) O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. What does Paul call the Galatians because they didn’t sensibly tie the cross to their justification?

Gal 3:1 (ESV) O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. What does Paul call the Galatians because they didn’t sensibly tie the cross to their justification? “You stupid Galatians!” - New English Bible “My Galatian friends, the trouble with you is that you will not use your common sense.” - William Barclay, The Letters and The Revelation “O dear idiots of Galatia!” - J.B. Phillips, The New Testament in Modern English

Gal 3:1 (ESV) O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. O senseless Galatians, who has put the evil eye on you-- you before whose very eyes Jesus Christ was placarded upon his Cross? - William Barclay, Daily Study Bible Why was Jesus hung on the cross like a poster?

O senseless Galatians, who has put the evil eye on you-- you before whose very eyes Jesus Christ was placarded upon his Cross? - William Barclay, Daily Study Bible Why was Jesus hung on the cross like a poster? - Like a notice that someone was longer responsible for someone else’s debts. - Reversed: Like a notice that all our debt of sin has been lovingly paid.

Gal 3:1 (ESV) O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. Why did Paul call the Galatians foolish? A) They were attempting to pay a debt they couldn’t pay. B) They were attempting to pay a debt that had already been paid.

Gal 3:2 (ESV) Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? What answer does Paul expect the Galatians to give?

Gal 3:2 (ESV) Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? What answer does Paul expect the Galatians to give? If they were justified and received the Spirit, what could the Judaizers possibly have to offer them?

Gal 3:2 (ESV) Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? What answer does Paul expect the Galatians to give? If they were justified and received the Spirit, what could the Judaizers possibly have to offer them? Paul was trying to get the Galatians to see that they were justified by faith before the Judaizers arrived in Galatia.

Gal 3:3 (ESV) Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? Paul contrasts the power sources of the Spirit and the flesh. He isn’t talking about the indwelling of the Spirit, but the Spirit’s power to produce faith in Christ and justification by the preaching of the Gospel. Rom 1:16-17 (ESV) For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”

Did the Spirit lead them to begin their Christian life through the power of the Gospel?

Gal 3:3 (ESV) Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? Paul contrasts the power sources of the Spirit and the flesh. He isn’t talking about the indwelling of the Spirit, but the Spirit’s power to produce faith in Christ and justification by the preaching of the Gospel. Did the Spirit lead them to begin their Christian life through the power of the Gospel? If it’s powerful enough to begin a new life with Christ, is it powerful enough to complete the journey?

Gal 3:3 (ESV) Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? If the Spirit had to get us out of sin by the power of the Gospel, can we stay out of condemnation with a legal system that condemns us with the first infraction?

Gal 3:3 (ESV) Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? If the Spirit had to get us out of sin by the power of the Gospel, can we stay out of condemnation with a legal system that condemns us with the first infraction? It seems like the Judaizers didn’t have an issue with beginning the Christian life by faith
