Stars and Galaxies
The closest star to us The sun
A cluster of stars A galaxy is a cluster of stars together
The universe The universe is everything in space
The different types of universes
Stars make up galaxies which make up the universe
The different types of galaxies Draw three boxes each with a title and a picture of the galaxy in the box Spiral Galaxy Irregular Galaxy Elliptical Galaxy
What makes one star different from another? 1.Mass determines lifespan of star 2.Flame demonstration: predict on left side order from coolest to hottest. (orange, white, yellow, red, blue)
The color of a star tells its surface temperature Remember: ROYWB A star’s color tells you how hot its surface is. From coolest to hottest: Red, orange, yellow, white, blue
Size of stars
A star is born Nebulas- dust and debris collecting in space
Protostar Star is being formed from nebula dust and debris
Star is formed=main sequence
Dying star
Super nova Explosion moving at about 6 million mph!! OR
White dwarf star Black dwarf star
A star has died
Neutron Star If the star is at least 1.5 but less than 9 times larger than the Sun, the core left after the supernova will collapse into a neutron star. This is a star composed only of neutrons. Black Hole If the star is at least 9 or more times larger than the Sun, the core will continue to collapse into a black hole, an extremely dense area with a strong gravitational pull that light can not escape. Neutron Star or Black Hole?
Types of Galaxies – Quasars… A quasar is a distant galaxy with a black hole at its center. As enormous amounts of gas revolve around a black hole, the gas heats up and shines brightly.
