1.3 Science and Technology are interrelated

Technology involves processes, devices, and people  Technology – use of knowledge to create processes or tools that change the way things are done  Systems for producing things  Devices or products  Involves the act of making or doing  Techniques and methods of use  Changes with time and new discoveries

Technology Design Process:  1. identify the problem/need  2. research problem and existing technology  3. develop standards  4. work within limits

Prototype  Prototype- working model used to see if the new technology will work and meet standards  Used to make sure no unexpected problems occur Why might a designer research a problem after making a prototype? The designer will troubleshoot, find any problems, fix them, and develop the full technology

Factors to consider when designing technology  CONSTRAINT  Limits on how technology can be designed  CRITERIA  Standards by which people judge a new technology

Categories of Technology  Medical – medicines, vaccine, devices  Agricultural – farming techniques, genetic engineering, food distribution  Energy and power – house wiring, power lines, electrical power plants  Information and communications- computers, internet, telephone  Transportation – road planning, cars, fuel-efficient engines  Manufacturing – assembly lines  Construction – architect design, construction machines, improvement on materials

Technology creates new opportunities to advance science  Technology allows scientists to make new, detailed, and accurate observations  Optical microscope – use light to form magnified image  SEM (scanning electron microscope) – uses electrons to for images, shows depth, able to see parts of an atom  AFM (atomic force microscope) – even greater magnification

Many advances in technology depends on advances in science  Animals as a technology inspiration:  1. spiders walk on walls – make new, stronger glue  2. sharkskin – new swimsuit fabrics that allow swimmer to move faster in water  3. penguins way of swimming – replaced propellers of a motor boat

New Technologies have both risks and benefits  Risk – undesired effect, sometimes preventable but other times not noticeable for a long time  Hollywood built a new bus transportation for everyone to use
