Section 4.1 and 4.2 Graphing Linear Equations

Review of coordinate plane: Ordered pair is written as (x,y). X is horizontal axis; Y is vertical axis. X Y

Plot and label the points on the coordinate plane: A: (2,4) B: (0,-3) C: (-4,3) D: (-1,-3) E: (3,0)

Plot and label the points on the coordinate plane:

REVIEW: Identify the Quadrants of the Coordinate Plane III IIIIV (+,+) (-,+) (-,-) (+,-)

Use the table below to create ordered pairs and graph the function. Input = XOutput = YOrdered Pair (X,Y)

(0,2) (1,4) (2,6) (3,8)

To graph any equation, create a table with x and y values. Example: y = 2x - 1 X (input)2x - 1Y (output)(x,y) 02 (0) – 1(0,-1) 12 (1) – 11(1,1) 2 3

Graph of y – 2x - 1

You try! Graph the following functions: y = 2x + 4 y = 4 x = 2

Verifying the Solution to an Equation Decide whether the given ordered pair is a solution to the equation: 3x + 6y = -12; (2,-3) Plug in the point (2,-3) into the equation for (x,y) and see if it makes the equation true. 3(2) + 6(-3) = – 18 = = -12This is true, so then (2,-3) is a solution. This means that the point (2,-3) is on the line.

Decide whether the given ordered pair is a solution to the equation:
